BlackBerry PlayBook to cost less than $500 – Should iPad be worried?

RIM’s 7-inch PlayBook is due to arrive in the first quarter of 2011 for under $500 putting it at a competitive price to fight against the iPad. For how long the PlayBook will remain at that price is still unknown.

The first PlayBook will be Wi-Fi only suggesting that there wouldn’t be any data plan for them off carriers, however the PlayBook will be able to tether to BlackBerry phones for data access on the go while 3G and 4G are planned for further releases.

According to Balsillie, Research in Motion is looking  to follow Apple’s lead in being able to buy the PlayBook from not just BlackBerry but Target and Wal-Mart. Distribution would also be available through companies who are already familiar with BlackBerry products.
