A recent post at Giz-China publishes a report along with photos which prove that Apple original White iPhone 4 is available for sale in China. However its only possible to get one through the country’s ‘grey market’, which is basically a system in which certain secret but not illegal (contrary to black market) good are sold at very high prices. Many unofficial resellers in China have a large amount of these and are also reported to be selling them online.
Pricing for these White iPhone 4s start from 5500 Yuan ($828) and increase to approximately 8000 Yuan ($1204) for the 16Gb model and even more for the 32Gb version. These excessively high prices are not only way above the retail prices as suggested officially by Apple for the black iPhone 4s but also they are all running on the latest iOS 4.1 which is locked to AT&T.
According to TUAW:
“This type of illegal resale has been a persistent problem for Apple. In 2008, the New York Times estimated that there were 1.4 million ill-gotten iPhones in the world. At this time last year, the Wall Street Journal estimated that number had grown to 2 million in China alone.”
