In my opinion, the new taskbar or Superbar in Windows 7 is probably the best feature in the operating system. Jumplists and lively taskbar buttons have really given developers opportunities to create excellent widgets, even better than what you can get with the Windows Gadgets platform. Some widgets we have covered in the past include a Gmail notifier, 7Stacks, StandaloneStack and Taskbar Meters. Lee Matthews from Download Squad has covered a taskbar widget called WeatherBar which puts weather information in the taskbar. WeatherBar uses tasbkar overlays, jumplists and taskbar button progress bar to show information at just a glance. Read more...

Windows 7 has an excellent built-in platform and API which can help third party developers to create native applications for Windows 7 that are location-aware. However, the only mistake Microsoft has made with ‘Location and Sensors’ in Windows 7 is that they did not include any geolocation service provider. Read more...

One of the major improvements in Windows 7 are its extensive personalization options. You can either download themes from the voluminous collection from the Personalization Gallery or create your own basic themes that can easily be shared with friends and family. Their Personalization Gallery is updated quite often and with the coming of valentines day, four new themes have been added to it. Rafael Rivera has found evidence that Microsoft is planning to being external beta testing for Windows 7 Service Pack 1 soon. In recent updates via Windows Update, Microsoft has quietly enabled a beta candidacy check in the registry. GodMode is the name given to cheats in video games that provide you with all weapons and access to all areas. As it turns out, Windows 7 has a GodMode cheat as well as uncovered by Caschy. It is basically a control panel of sorts which provides you access to all the features in one explorer window. In the Windows 7 control panel, features are grouped together either in categories or control panel item names. Nothing is grouped under anything in GodMode. Read more...

I recently stumbled across this official gadget by Microsoft for Bing. As excited as I was, I was disappointed to find out that it’s a very simple gadget that only shows suggestions and opens up the search results in the browser. The drop down suggestions aren’t even visual, i.e. you wont see image suggestions or the weather by typing in ‘New York weather’ like you get in Internet Explorer 8’s search box. Read more...

I’m one of those who firmly believe that Windows 7 is Microsoft’s best operating system ever. Hell, it’s the best operating system out there. But, Microsoft has done some little blunders with it such as the removal of the calendar application that was introduced in Vista ( I know Windows Live Mail has a calendar but it’s for Windows Live users ), and the removal of some very useful sidebar gadgets such as the Notes and Contacts gadgets. I had put up the notes gadget for download long ago, now I’ve finally managed to get off my bum and extract the Contacts gadget from Vista. Read more...
