Microsoft launches Visual Studio 2010 – now available for download

Visual Studio 2010 had been in testing ( betas, release candidate ) since some time now . Today, Microsoft has finally launched Visual Studio 2010 and Microsoft .NET Framework 4. Silverlight 4 will also be released to Web in the later part of this week.

You can head on over to Microsoft’s website and purchase Visual Studio 2010 Professional or Ultimate Edition right now. You can also download the trial version so that you can first have a feel of it and buy it if you are pleased with it.

President of the Server and Tools Business at Microsoft said:

The functionality of Visual Studio 2010, .NET Framework 4 and Silverlight 4 creates a powerful and unique combination, opening up new opportunities for developers to build applications that take advantage of new and existing devices, as well as emerging platforms like cloud services.

All the new versions of the Visual Studio have something unique from the previous version to help the developers build more rich and interactive applications without difficulty.

Some of the new features of Visual Studio 2010 are:

It has new editor that uses WPF, which has a rich interface. It also supports multiple monitors. Developers can have code on one monitor and user interface designer on the other..
It also has built-in support for Windows 7 mutitouch and “ribbon” interfaces which give an amazing look to user interfaces.
SharePoint 2010 functionalities are also included.
Windows Azure tools are also available in Visual Studio 2010 which help you to easily develop, debug and deploy cloud applications from Visual Studio.
It has also built in support for ASP.NET Model View Control.
Tools for making Windows Phone 7 apps.
Silverlight 4 support.
The IntelliTrace feature makes the “no-repro” discussion a thing of the past. Testers can file rich and actionable bugs with system information, and even include an environment snapshot. That way developers can reproduce the reported bug in the state it was found.

.Net 4.0 supports more languages and has support for high performance multi-tier applications. Silverlight 4 RTW will be released later this weekend and it will have some new features like it would have out of browser functionality, enhancements for enterprise application developers and will have 60 customized pre-written controls.

Visual Studio 2010, currently at release candidate status, will finally be launched on April 12, at DevConnections 2010 in Las Vegas. The Visual Studio Conference & Expo will serve as the launching pad for the much awaited next generation of Microsoft’s IDE which will support development for Windows 7, SharePoint 2010, Office 2010, Windows Azure, Silverlight 4, WPF and other products ( probably Windows Phone 7 Series as well) . The launch event will span over 3 days and feature keynotes from greats such as Bob Muglia, President of Server and Tools Business and Scott Guthrie, Corporate Vice President of .NET Developer Platform. The launch event will also have sessions by speakers from the industry on topics such as Silverlight, WPF, WF, WCF, Application Lifecycle Management, .NET 4.0, ASP.NET 4.0 AJAX, ASP.NET MVC and many more.

Visual Studio 2010 was originally scheduled to be launched much earlier but performance issues caused the delay. The release candidate build was released to MSDN subscribers a few days ago.

Recently leaked Windows Phone 7 Series development documents indicated that Visual Studio 2010 will be used by developers so expect some excitement by mobile developers surrounding this release, given that Microsoft has a successful time convincing them at MIX10.

Visual Studio 2010 and .NET 4 release candidate now available for MSDN subscribers

Visual Studio 2010, the latest version of Microsoft’s IDE with a new improved UI built using WPF and tools for Windows 7 and SharePoint 2010 development has already been delayed. Originally slated for 22nd March, the release was delayed to performance issues. The latest launch date has been set for April 12, 2010. Appropriately, Microsoft has delivered a release candidate build for Visual Studio 2010 and .NET 4 framework. It is currently available for download to MSDN subscribers while it will be available for public download on 10th February.

According to Mary Jo Foley’s findings, Microsoft had publically acknowledged the performance issues with Visual Studio 2010. A blog post by Kirill from the Visual Studio Quality Assurance team explains it all:

During Beta 1 and Beta 2 it became painfully obvious that the new VS had an obesity problem: it was slow, consumed a lot of memory and the worst thing, with enough modules loaded it stopped fitting into the 2GB address space on 32-bit machines…. In a nutshell, with a lot of new functionality a lot more modules were loaded into memory. Besides, we now had to fully load the CLR (Common Language Runtime) and WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation) at application startup. Moreover, there were all kinds of memory leaks all over the place

The performance problems that Visual Studio 2010 faces are based on the same reasons that Windows had – dealing with 20+ year old code bases. While it’s easier said than done to start over from scratch, I doubt Microsoft would take this step with the next version of Visual Studio. There are just too many compatibility issues that can crop up with such a move, and the ecosystem that Microsoft is supporting doesn’t allow that.

The first beta of Visual Studio was released back in May 2009 as a Virtual PC image, while the second beta was released in October of 2009. Here’s a list of new features in Visual Studio 2010:

There aren’t any known changes in the release candidate from the second beta release. The main work being done is to improve the performance of the IDE. Microsoft sets 22nd March as the release date for Visual Studio 2010

Microsoft has just announced the release date for Visual Studio 2010. Users will be able to get their hands on the final version of Visual Studio 2010 on 22nd March 2010. On a related note, Microsoft has also announced that the Beta 2 of Visual Studio 2010 and Dot Net Framework 4 has been made available to MSDN subscribers. Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2 and Dot Net framework 4 Beta 2 will be made available to the general public on 21st October.

drag-and-drop bindings with Silverlight and Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF)
