Galaxy S7’s Snapdragon 820 chip beats iPhone 6s’ A9 in benchmarks

Galaxy S7 has been getting a lot of praise and right so. Samsung listened to consumer feedback and brought back the missing features that they wanted such as water proofing and extendable storage. They also kept the same design and improved it for both S7 and S7 Edge variants while great enhancing the camera. But the performance of the new Snapdragon 820 is cherry topping on all these features – it beats Apple’s A9 chip used in iPhone 6s and 6s Plus in benchmarks.

AnTuTu is a popular benchmarking app available for both iOS and Android. During testing, it has been seen that the Qualcomm 820 chip beats Apple’s A9 by 3,726 points. This lead from Qualcomm’s processors will also be evident in other flagship phones such as LG G5 which use the same chip.

In terms of GPU, the difference is significantly extended, with the Qualcomm 820 beating Apple’s A9 by 15994 points. This is a huge lead and should give a big boost to games and graphics intensive apps on Android.

Apple has improved performance considerably between the A8 and A9 chips as seen from the above graphs. Metal graphics perform 3x times faster on A9 compared to A8 and overall performance was much faster in iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, when compared to the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. Keeping these increases in view, Apple is likely to bounce back on the top of the benchmark charts with iPhone 7 and A10 chip. However, it is expected that Apple will stick with the A9 chip for the upcoming iPhone 5se.

It should be understood that benchmarks do not always result in better real world usage. A speed test on YouTube proves that even though Samsung’s S7 is faster in benchmarks, in terms of real world performance, the iPhone 6s easily beats it. Check out the video below:

If you have a Galaxy S7 and iPhone 6s lying around, you can run the benchmarks too by downloading Antutu for Android and iOS.
