Shane Kim, corporate VP of Microsoft game studios has confirmed that there is a handheld device in the making, that would be somewhere in between the Xbox and Zune platforms. This actually means that Zune HD might not be that device, since it is the Zune platform.
When this handheld arrives, people will say it is Microsoft’s response to the iPhone, the Nintendo DS, the PSP, and so on, but it will be pretty evident that this device, its software, and services have been in the works for a very long time
If it’s a response to the iPhone, it will be a phone plus gaming device. Maybe Pink? Pink is the long time rumored Microsoft branded Smartphone that will be made by a third party, but might have Zune integration along with Windows Mobile. Microsoft hasn’t ever confirmed these rumors and is unsure how to enter such a market as well
How do we enter into that market – do we do our own device, do we create our own phone – that’s a question for the company itself – do we continue to go down the Windows Mobile path, which is that path that we’re on today.
According to my knowledge, it would either be the device that would be the Y in XYZ (Xbox, Y, Zune). But whether it’ll be Project Pink or another new handheld entertainment device is unknown. Throw in Zune HD in the mix and it’s unsure what its features will be since Microsoft will be introducing another new device in market.
