Snapchat announces new stickers, audio and video chat features for chat

Snapchat has announced some major updates to its chat and story viewing experiences. Chat will be upgraded with stickers, audio and video notes. The update is releasing to users later today for iPhone and Android.

Snapchat chat 2.0

Chat 2.0 is what Snapchat is calling its new feature update. Users can now start audio or video chats instantly through one tap. New stickers can also be used, similar to other popular chat apps such as Facebook Messenger, to communicate with friends. The stickers can be searched via keywords so you can quickly find the right emotion you want to convey.

Today, we’re excited to introduce Chat 2.0. You can start by sending a few chats, and when your friend shows up, start talking or video chatting instantly with one tap. Your friend can simply listen if you want to sing them a song, or watch if you have a new puppy to show them. If they aren’t there, you can quickly send an audio note to say what you mean. And sometimes, a sticker says it best :)

Snapchat has also changed how users view Stories. When a story finished, the next one will star playing automatically without the need of any manual action. To skip the story, swipe ahead or pull down to exit the Story viewing mode.

Although competing chat services such as iMessage, Hangout, Messenger, WhatsApp, KIK, Line and others offer similar features, Snapchat is differentiating itself by providing a unique design and user experience. Built upon the existing video chat feature, which seems to be rarely used, Snapchat will allow users to start a video call while chatting and sharing stickers. Audio notes will be integrated seamlessly too and allow quick switching between chat and listening to audio. It will be interesting to see Snapchat’s stickers and if they brand it like Messenger, where new movies and trends inspire sticker designs.
