Cyanogen Mod 7 (CM7) Final Version Released – Based on Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread

Finally, the final build of Cyanogen Mod 7, the most popular after market Android firmware has been released. This release was a long time in coming ( took 4 months ) and is based on Android 2.3.3, otherwise known as Gingerbread. The great thing about this release is that despite most companies having dropped support for providing newest Android releases for their phones, CM7 brings all Gingerbread goodness to those phones. The current list of supported phones and tablets is 30 and contains lots of old models as well as new ones.

While rooting Nexus S isn’t that difficult via ADB, it isn’t the easiest thing to do either for the average joe. Luckily, PaulObrien, an Android developer/hacker has created a simple one click SuperBoot which is probably the easiest method to root your Nexus S on Android 2.3.3. It automatically flashes your Nexus S with the boot.img file which roots Android 2.3.3 as well as install SU and SuperUser.

It appears that Samsung took Apple’s challenge of slimming down the latest iPad pretty seriously, making them introduce even thinner tablets than the iPad 2. Samsung has officially announced two Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablets, Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, both incredibly powerful and even thinner than the iPad 2 i.e just 8.6mm (0.33 inches) thick. On top of that, both will be running Samsung’s TouchWiz UX or TouchWiz 4.0, brilliantly integrated into Android 3.0.

Just like other cool startups ( Facebook has a pirate as well as leet language as options ), Google has a hidden hacker language. It turns the language of Google Search to ‘leet’ speak. While it’s not the easiest thing to understand, specially if you’re not the geeky type like us, it’s very entertaining.

Well, well, well. Steve Jobs wouldn’t be sitting easy after reading this. Safari on Mac OS X fell to hackers at Pwn2Own contest in just 5 seconds! That’s incredibly scary by any means but the good news is, the exploits used to do this aren’t going to be released in the wild for wrong usage. A close second was Internet Explorer 8 ( who uses that? Get IE9! ), which fell to three different vulnerabilities and custom exploits.

Google Releases Chrome 10 With Password Sync & Is Really Fast!

Google released a beta version of Chrome 10 which showcased the faster V8 engine making it twice as fast as the previous version. Today, the final version of Google Crome 10 has been released and is now available for download to the public. Chrome 10 also supports password syncing meaning you can sync your saved passwords on your machine to the Google server and then access them on any other computer. This can be further secured by a secret passphrase before allowing the data sync.

Android Is Now The No.1 Smartphone OS In United States!

Back in May 2010, Android was in fourth place behind Blackberry, iOS and Windows Mobile in the overall smartphone market of United States. By the mid of 2010, it surpassed Windows Mobile while overtaking Apple’s iOS by the end of the year. Now, it has finally snatched the lead in the big US market, crossing Blackberry OS right at the start of 2011. Blackberryf now has a US market share of 30.4% which is approximately 1% less than that of Google’s Android at 31.2%, making Android the most-used smartphone OS in America.

Honeycomb’s Music App Supports Google Music Sync–Works on Rooted Android Phones

The guys over at XDA Developers have managed to extract the music app from Honeycomb and use it to sync music using the yet unannounced music syncing service by Google. Honeycomb hasn’t been released for handsets yet but hackers have managed to extract different parts of it to use in custom ROMs already.

How To Install Android 2.3.2 Gingerbread on Samsung Galaxy S [Guide]

After a long wait and tons of leaked Android 2.2 Froyo builds, Samsung Galaxy S users got a well deserved Gingerbread 2.3.2 build I9000XWJV1. This is a beta build but everything seems to work in it. There are some reported incompatibilities with different apps but that’s due to the fact that it’s a Gingerbread build and not Froyo. Other than that, it seems like a good build to try out.
