BREAKING: Skype for Android Now Available for All Users! (Not just Verizon anymore)

<Category: Android, Google> 3 Comments

All Android users had been waiting for this news since a long time: Skype for Android is now available for every Android user. Previously, it was restricted to only Verizon users, just like Microsoft’s Bing app is which was totally ridiculous to be honest – it puts the ‘open’ness of Android to shame. But that’s in the past and the app can now be downloaded for free from Android Market. You can make free Skype-to-Skype calls (no matter PC, Mac, iPhone or Android etc) and chat with friends as well. Calls work over both WiFi and 3G but for US users, it’s WiFi only. And of course, you can buy Skype Credit to place calls anywhere in the world!

Google is celebrating today, September 27, as their 12th anniversary with a special doodle. The doodle is a pretty birthday cake with a candle which replaces the ‘L’ in Google. Google has been the dominating search engine in the world, since forever it seems.

Google has been a success story as great as Apple or Microsoft’s. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that Google has shaped the Internet as we know it today. Google was created on September 4th, 1998 in Silicon Valley, California, by Larry Page and Sergey Brin. The search engine was officially launched on September 27th.

Samsung are preparing to release Galaxy Tab soon. It is expected to be a huge hit for Android and new tablet fans. It will cost around £599 and is considered to be the main competitor to the iPad. The Galaxy Tab has a 7” screen which is smaller than the iPad’s 9.7”. They both have a 1Ghz process but the Samsung Galaxy Tab has a 3.1MP back camera and a 1.3MP front camera so could this be the thing that gives the Galaxy Tab the edge? Will loyal Apple fans dump the iPad for the Galaxy Tab?

A few days ago, we showed you how to install Froyo Android 2.2 (JPC build) on a Samsung Galaxy S. A lot of users root Android phones to gain additional features and run apps that aren’t allowed to run normally. Rooting also allows you to install the One Click Lag Fix app that removes even the slightest lags you might encounter while using a Galaxy S, making it the fastest Android phone out there. It scores a staggering 2100-2300 points in Quadrant benchmark when running the official Android 2.1  build with LagFix installed. We showed you how to root Android 2.1 on Galaxy S in a previous post. Google Voice app appears in the App Store

<Category: Apple, Google> 2 Comments

After over an year of rejections(by Apple), anger(from the users) and betrayal(by Sean Kovacz), Apple has approved a Google Voice app for the App Store. Sean Kovacz was the pioneer of Google Voice apps, after it was taken away from the App store, Kovacz submitted his app to Cydia instead. Apple’s reason for rejection was that such an app duplicated the features of an iPhone and people suspected an Apple/Google war brewing. Google didn’t let Apple stop them and created an HTML5 web app.

A new beta build of Android 2.2 codenamed Froyo is making rounds on the Internet. I found it on XDA and decided to give it a go on my Samsung Galaxy S which was running the latest official JM1 Android 2.1 build. So far, I’m really pleased with the performance and improvements in this version. Having used the previous Froyo JPC ROM for Galaxy S, I can say that things are improving. GPS works better as well as the browser. Everything is just smoother than before and dare I say, it’s even useable without a lagfix although being an iPhone user, I can’t stand even the smallest of lags so I’ve got it up and running with One Click Lag Fix 1.0.Samsung Galaxy S with Android 2.2 Upgrade
