10 must have Google Chrome extensions for Bloggers

<Category: Chrome, Google> 7 Comments

Ever since Google Chrome got support for extensions, people have been flocking in large numbers from Firefox. This is evident by Chrome’s rapidly growing market share, which has surpassed Safari, the supposedly ‘world’s fastest and best browser’ ( as said by Steve Jobs ). But for bloggers to make a switch to a new browser, we must have our desired extensions available to even think of it. Extensions which make blogging easier for us, and put a lot information at our disposal at just a few clicks or even none if possible. I’ve compiled a list of such extensions which every blogger would love to have as a part of their blogging repertoire while using Google Chrome.

Google has been very good at marketing its web browser Chrome ever since it launched. For launch, they came up with the interesting idea of a comic which gave the details of the inner workings of the browser as well as the aims behind its creation. Recently, they aired one of the most interesting advertisements that you’ll ever see. Now, for the holiday season, they’ve come with the idea of gifting Google Chrome to your friends and loved ones with the theme of your choice along with a personalized greeting with a photo or video.

<Category: Microsoft> 2 Comments

image Google has released another update for the Chrome, versions 4.0.245.0, aimed at dev version users, which brings a Kiosk Mode to the browser along with the usual bug fixes and stability improvements. Kiosk Mode in Chrome is inspired by the very same option in Internet Explorer, which hides the toolbar and status bar and runs the browser in a full screen mode.

Google What Browser

Some guys from Google recently surveyed many people to find out that they didn’t know what a web browser is. It was quiet shocking seeing how everybody uses them to Facebook and Youtube but doesn’t know what that piece of software is. Seeing this, some folks from Google have created a website called WhatBrowser.org, which provides information about them in a very simple manner.

A dissection of the Google Chrome OS press release

<Category: Google> 7 Comments

Google Chrome OS has created a lot of hype since yesterday, even though it doesn’t seem to do anything new that current netbook operating systems can’t. If the leaked screenshots are real, and that’s an indication of what it’s going to be like, I see no differences in it than Moblin, Julicloud or any other netbook operating system available. In fact, Moblin and Julicloud offer a better experience to the Joe user who just wants a user friendly operating system that looks good, is feature packed and just works.

Is Google Chrome OS going to be feature packed?

Lets define feature packed.

Lets take the iPhone OS as an example, since some people are ridiculously comparing Google Chrome OS with it. The iPhone OS is feature packed. You can play music, watch movies, browse the net, play games, use GPS, edit video and even extend the functionality through 56,000+ applications available at the App Store. These applications stay on your iPhone, run from your iPhone natively and can access the web.

What is Google Chrome OS going to do?

We hear a lot from our users and their message is clear — computers need to get better. People want to get to their email instantly, without wasting time waiting for their computers to boot and browsers to start up. They want their computers to always run as fast as when they first bought them. They want their data to be accessible to them wherever they are and not have to worry about losing their computer or forgetting to back up files.

Current operating systems are getting faster and faster at booting and shutting down as well. Google should try using the new netbook operating systems. Why do people still use Windows XP on their netbooks then? Windows gained 96% netbook market even though it were free Linux distros who were getting a lot of attention to being with. I can check my email instantly as well on any operating system thanks to desktop applications, mobile applications and web applications. I can back up their data to the cloud using any operating system too thanks to Live Mesh, Mobile Me, Sky Drive, Drop Box and the likes. Although Windows doesn’t have these features bundled with the operating system due to legal issues, but it’s still possible in current operating systems.

Can’t wait for Google Chrome OS? Try these alternatives

<Category: Google> 14 Comments

HP Mini netbook Google Chrome Operating System announcement has shaken up the entire blogosphere, even though what it aims to achieve with its OS is already being done by many currently available netbook operating systems with varying degrees of success. My opinion is you can’t win the operating system war on web applications alone, you need both client and web apps in an OS. Google thinks otherwise. Why would you want to launch a browser just to access Windows Live Messenger or Skype?

Google Chrome OS will be available in 2010, but till then you can try out these many wonderful alternatives available that provide you quick access to web destinations as well as native apps.

Microsoft will be making a big announcement next Monday, although we don’t know any details about it. But from the above update on FriendFeed by Robert Scoble, it seems it will be similar to the Chrome OS that Google announced today. It could very well be something based around their research project Gazelle:

Gazelle – a Chrome like Web Browser from Microsoft Research.

<Category: Microsoft, Research> 2 Comments

GazelleChannel 9 has this great video on the Gazelle web browser project by Microsoft Research. It’s being constructed on an operating system architecture, which means improved security, resource handling and sharing.

Gazelle’s Browser Kernel is an operating system that exclusively manages resource protection and sharing across web site principals. This construction exposes intricate design issues that no previous work has identified, such as legacy protection of cross-origin script source, and cross-principal, cross-process display and events protection.
