Apple launches iBooks 2 for iPad and Reinvents Textbooks

Apple announced iBooks 2 for iPad yesterday with the major new announcement of iBooks textbooks. iBooks textbooks are not simply digital versions of their paper back counterparts but they contain interactive photos, videos, navigation, diagrams and so much more. This is a major step by Apple towards helping out students. Companies such as Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, McGraw-Hill and Pearson will be offering educational titles in the iBookstore and most books will be priced at $14.99 or less as compared to the paperback versions which cost anywhere from $60 to $100.

Ryan Petrich, the developer behind acclaimed Cydia tweaks such as Display Out, SwitcherMod, Untrackerd and Action Menu brings yet another cool release for all jailbroken iPhones and iPods called PagePusher. The tweak adds an iBooks-like “page turning” transition when switching between application panels in iOS. This tweak however does perceivably slow down your device performance and having a system-wide page turning effect is rather annoying than it feels inside iBooks.

Apple releases iBooks 1.2 for iOS Devices with Collections, Print Support and More!

Apple has updated iBooks to version 1.2 with some major new features. You can now organize books and PDFs into personal Collections. This is a blessing for those with unorganized iBook Shelves. Fully illustrated books have also been added to the iBookstore ranging from children’s books to beautifully designed art books. Let’s see the Kindle do this one. Another expected feature is print support for PDF documents and notes in iBooks via AirPrint.

iBooks app would also be available for iPhone and iPod touch

One of the most important and most liked features of the iPad is its iBooks app and most people were hoping that it would also be incorporated in iPhone and iPod touch [Just like the Kindle app for iPad which is also for the other two devices] Steve Jobs just revealed that in iPhone OS 4, iBooks would also be available for iPhone and iPod touch users.

With just a day remaining for the launch of iPad, Apple has released the iBooks app for iPad on App Store. This iBooks app is free and only available for U.S. users.
