If you’re a regular social media user, you can’t say you didn’t see this coming. Walking along the footsteps of geolocation integration and innovation by services such as Twitter, Foursquare and Gowalla, Facebook has too, gone location aware with their newest feature called Places. As the name suggests, Places is all about locations and allows you to check into different places. The check ins can be done either alone or with friends or for friends who don’t have a smartphone.
Lately, we’ve been hearing rumors of Apple working on integration Facebook into iPhone OS. While this hasn’t been officially announced, we’ve seen clues in the OS code hinting at the integration. Patently Apple has come across a new patent by Apple which is full of various workflows workflows of adding contacts and social networking, with Facebook shown as an example.
GunningForSafety has found some clues that apple is planning to integrate Facebook into iPhone OS 4.0 just as webOS and HTC have done in the past. Currently iPhone has support for user accounts of Gmail, MobileMe, Yahoo etc and looks like Facebook account would be included in the new OS too.
Microsoft has come up with a cool new feature for Bing. It has started showing tweets in the results for popular Twitter users. Tweets with profile image and link show up when you search for popular Twitter users such as Robert Scoble or @aplusk. This is one of the first integrations of Twitter by a major search engine by default, as you can already ad similar capabilities to Yahoo Search through the Yahoo Search Gallery, which isn’t that convenient.
To see the tweets, you’ll have to use the word twitter, tweet or @{Twitter user name} in your search query on Bing. This doesn’t work perfectly yet as I found out because when I search for @aplusk, this is what I get:
