Application icons are an integral part of a software as much as its UI. To be able to have icons that help users identify your applications at a glance is a design win. Since Microsoft has new software or new versions of software being developed all the time, it is interesting to go through the different types of icons they use for different applications. The latest known beta build of Office 2010 ( version 14.0.4417.1000) has been leaked to the Internet. A few days ago, pictures of this particular build had surfaced on various websites. The images show the new and improved Backstage view along with a complete new set of icons for each Office Application. A new Upload Center is also available for document sharing as well as a new activation system.

Office 2010 Backstage - Microsoft Word (Technical Preview)

If you’ve got your hands on a copy of Office 2010 Technical Preview, you would have noticed that the Office menu has now been replaced with a new page that covers the whole application when opened. This is the Office Backstage. This new view allows you to get work done faster than you could before with the menu.

While you’re downloading Windows 7 RTM build 7600, you might as well put Office 2010 Beta in the queue as well because it has been leaked too. Microsoft really needs a plumber to fix these leaks don’t they?

Revert back to the Office 2007 button behavior in Office 2010

Outspace - Microsoft Word (Technical Preview) (Unlicensed Product) Microsoft has introduced a new ‘start page’ that opens up by clicking the button in the top left corner of Office 2010. According to Rafael, it’s know by its codename which is ‘Outspace’ so far. It provides quick access to various tasks in a very clean and simple manner although can be confusing for those used to the Office 2007 button behavior which showed an upside down ‘start menu’ when clicked. Rafael has found a way to switch this behavior back to the 2007 style in Office 2010. Here’s how:

Outlook Connector released for Office 2010

Microsoft Outlook Connector 32-bit Setup Microsoft has released updated versions of Outlook Connector for Office 2010 Technical Preview, in 32 and 64 bit versions. Outlook Connector sync Hotmail, calendar and contacts with Outlook. The previous version of the connector works with Office 2007 but not with Office 2010.

Long Zheng posted a few blurry screenshots of Office 2010 a couple of days ago from a TechEd 2009 keynote. Here’s another one from Techradar who have posted a first look at Office 2010, covering the many upcoming changes in Outlook. This screenshot shows Outlook making use of Windows 7’s Jumplists which shortcuts to create a new email message, appointment, contact or a task. The taskbar button also shows when new mail is available just like Windows Live Mail does now.

Office 2010 CTP A new blog has popped up on Office 2010, called the Microsoft Office 2010 IT Blog. It has given out information on the roll out of Office 2010 CTP to testers in July this year. Mary Jo Foley writes that Microsoft plans to roll out the CTP to thousands of invited testers in waves. The CTP will include Office 2010 Client, SharePoint Server 2010 and Office Web Applications, the online version of Office.
