Before I made the switch to Mac OS X, I used KeepVid to download YouTube videos on Windows. However, I’ve never gotten KeepVid’s java applet to work on my Mac, so I had to find an alternative. That alternative was iSkysoft’s Free Video Downloader. Free Video Downloader is specifically written for Mac OS X 10.5+(intel only), and is integrated with Safari. The Safari integration is what sets this application apart from similar ones. Here’s a break-down of how it works:

Mac OS X developer Emilio Gomariz has made an amazing font named 114.psd Type, brilliantly arranging 114 Photoshop files. The idea was to utilize the ability of OS X to remember the positions of files when the windows are minimized and brings them back to the front. Each letter of the font is created using different files, from 1 file for I till 9 files for X. He placed the 114 Photoshop files in careful positions, minimized them on the dock and when he re-opened them, he got the font’s alphabets amazingly showing up on the desktop.

Recently, a new Trojan virus for Mac was discovered. This virus, along with others apparently in the woodwork, show that hackers have taken notice of the increase in popularity of OS X, and are mobilizing on it. Sophos, makers of the anti-virus software Sophos Anti-Virus, have been tracking the trojan for a while now. Needless to say, this news had me reevaluating my current virus protection.

Apple to ‘Open’ OS X Beginning With Lion?

<Category: Apple, Mac, OS X> No comment

Apple’s mobile operating system, iOS, has received a lot of criticism over the years for being a ‘closed’ system. To the average user, all apps have to be downloaded through the App Store. Because of this restriction, Apple had the final say on what could, and could not, be installed on your device. Enter the Mac App Store in Snow Leopard 10.6.6. The blogosphere(that’s a word, right?) works itself to a frenzy coming up with theories about Apple censoring our computers and making Mac a closed system in the future. At the time, these theories were not far from reasonable, despite assurances from Steve Jobs himself that it would not happen.
