I had been following this thread on enabling HD video recording on iPhone 3GS since some weeks now. It took some time to perfect, but now HD video of up to 1080×800 resolution can be recorded on the iPhone 3GS @ 30 frames per second. This is way better than the 640 x 480 official resolution provided by Apple. This is possible because the ARM Cortex processor in iPhone 3GS is capable of recording HD videos. Mike Pan has managed to bypass this limit and here’s how you can do it too via his blog:

Video recording and auto focus equipped 3.2 MP camera in iPhone 3G S are the main reasons why people are upgrading to it. Video editing is built in the iPhone OS, and it also opens up video capture for other applications. iPod Touch seems to have been left far behind. But, TechCrunch has gotten some information from their sources in Asia: Read more...

Facebook announced their new app for iPhone, version 3.0 with a hefty feature list. Missing in the list was video capture and upload. Joe Hewitt, a Facebook employee working on the iPhone app tweeted a day after, that video uploading has been implemented in the new Facebook iPhone app – but there’s a catch. You won’t be able to watch your friend’s Facebook videos yet on the iPhone because Facebook videos are encoded in a very high bit rate which the iPhone doesn’t play. This might change in the future though, either through updates to the iPhone OS, or changes made by Facebook to encode videos in an iPhone compatible bit rate.
Even without the playback, it’ll be great to use your iPhone 3G S to record and upload videos directly to Facebook. Expect the new app to appear in the App Store this summer. Read more...

The biggest reason to upgrade to the new iPhone 3G S is obviously its new 3 megapixel camera with video capture. Video is recorded at a good 30 fps VGA resolution. This is the perfect resolution to publish videos on Youtube. Along with the built in video editor, and one click share via email, Mobile Me, MMS or Youtube, iPhone 3G S will really raise the bar for video recording on mobile devices. Even though Apple is really late at video recording for the iPhone, but they sure have done it in the best style.
But just how good are the videos recorded by the iPhone 3G S? As I was wondering this myself, TechCrunch posted on why the iPhone 3G S should have been called iPhone 3G V for its video recording features. Here’s a video they’ve put up that shows off the video quality: Read more...
