Final version of Microsoft Security Essentials releasing soon

<Category: Microsoft> 2 Comments

Microsoft Security Essentials I’ve been a very happy user of the limited beta for Microsoft Security Essentials, Microsoft’s free antivirus and anti-malware software. It has been the best antivirus that I have ever used, free or paid. Well, since Microsoft Security Essentials is free, I’m sure it’ll knock out the bloated competition *cough* Norton, Mcafee, Kaspersky *cough*. An email has been sent out to beta participants today with the news of an eminent final version public release in a few weeks.

Microsoft Education Labs have released a new Math Worksheet Generator which is like a dream come true for teachers, parents and even elder siblings like me who have to teach Maths to the younger ones. It lets you input a Maths question ranging from basic arithmetic to algebra, and based on that creates lots of such question automatically, along with their answers on a work sheet. Trust me, it saves a lot of time and makes everything so much easier. Here’s a quick guide on how to get started:

Another hands on video of the Zune HD

<Category: Microsoft> Only 1 comment

The folks at Engadget just keep getting their hands on the Zune HD, one way or the other. They’ve got another new hands on video of the Zune HD up and it shows the same eye candy that we’ve already seen. As you’ll see in the video, the Zune HD is slimmer than the iPhone, and looks really small in the user’s hands. Yes, there’s nothing else new to see in the video if you’ve already seen the past hands on videos. I can’t wonder why they couldn’t just use the browser in the video for demonstration. Anyhow, here’s the video below of the Zune HD with all its Tegra powered goodness.

The results are out, Microsoft Security Essentials beats the competition

<Category: Microsoft> 11 Comments

AV-Test GmbH did a thorough test of Microsoft Security Essentials, with almost 3200 viruses, Trojans and worms. All files were detected by the AV, even those ones that aren’t yet detected and cleaned by other paid AV software. They also tested it for false positives, where an AV points out legitimate software as a virus, and even then MSE passed the test with flying colors. None of the clean files were marked as malicious by it.

Apps for Windows: A Review of The New York Times Reader 2.0

I had been planning on starting a section on Apps for Windows since some time now, and no better way to start with version 2 of one of my favorite applications, The New York Times Reader. Previously based on WPF, and now shifted to Adobe Air, for cross platform compatibility, the new Times Reader 2.0 is available for Windows, Linux and OS X users. It contains some new enhancements over version 1, but most of the changes have been cosmetic. It really looks as if it was designed for the Mac only, if you take a cue from the new UI. It’s clean and slightly gray, with excellent typography and streamlined navigation. While the application itself is free, along with some of the news sections, you’ll have to shell out $3.45/week for full access. That shouldn’t stop you from enjoying the free version though, as it could cater most users very well with its variety of content. The available news sections increases on Sunday, with Magazine being the added free section for that day with several other paid ones. The New York Times Reader
