Initial sales numbers have shown that Windows 7 is on the right track.

I’m one of those who firmly believe that Windows 7 is Microsoft’s best operating system ever. Hell, it’s the best operating system out there. But, Microsoft has done some little blunders with it such as the removal of the calendar application that was introduced in Vista ( I know Windows Live Mail has a calendar but it’s for Windows Live users ), and the removal of some very useful sidebar gadgets such as the Notes and Contacts gadgets. I had put up the notes gadget for download long ago, now I’ve finally managed to get off my bum and extract the Contacts gadget from Vista.

Final version of Paint.NET 3.5 has just been released and is available for download. Paint.NET is a free image and photo editing application that is designed to run on Windows platform. The freeware contains all the essential features such as crop, rotate, resize, color adjustment and much more. Paint.NET 3.5 final release brings support for Aero in Windows 7 and Vista, a revamped UI, a few bug fixes and much more.

Parallels has just released Parallels Desktop 5 for Mac. Parallels Desktop is a virtualization software for Snow Leopard. As the name implies, it enables you to run Mac and other operating systems in parallel. The just released virtualization companion for Mac enables you to run Windows 7, Linux and other operating systems on your Apple machine.

Microsoft CodePlex has just released BingPaper. BingPaper is a small, simple and useful application that downloads the current Bing Image and sets it as your wallpaper. With BingPaper, gone are the days where you were required to right click on a particular Bing Image, save it and then set it as your desktop background.

Firefox has the worst UI amongst all the popular browsers. Almost all other browsers ( IE, Chrome, Safari ) have a new and better UI along with some sort of Windows 7 integration ( Aero Glass, jumplists, Aero Peek, thumbnail previews etc ), where as Firefox has none. The UI is still stuck in the Windows XP era. Mozilla has plans to change all that with Firefox 3.7 release.

Windows Live Movie Maker isn’t really the best application in the currently available Windows Live Essentials suite, since it hasn’t even hit version 1 yet and doesn’t have much features. Microsoft dumped the Movie Maker application that was bundled in Windows ( before Windows 7 ) to replace it with Windows Live Movie Maker but the reception for this application hasn’t been good. People have actually been downloading Windows Movie Maker for Windows 7.

Firefox 3.7 might have full support for Aero glass in Windows Vista and 7 as evident from some mockups available in the Mozilla Wiki. These are only mockups of what it might look like, but don’t raise your expectations to high. Mozilla had claimed to make Firefox 3 resemble the UI of different operating systems, but so far they didn’t get it right for Vista and XP despite many releases.
