New features in Windows Mobile 6.5.3

<Category: Microsoft, Windows, Windows Mobile> 2 Comments

Sony Ericsson Aspen is the first mobile with Windows Mobile 6.5.3, the latest update to version 6.5 which is optimized for finger touch with various updates to the UI. It’s the first version of Windows Mobile to natively support capacitive touch displays ( HTC HD2 with Windows Mobile 6.5 has a capacitive display too though), finally bringing it up to date with competing mobile operating systems. Internet Explorer performance has also been updated, but I’ve seen most Windows Mobile users deeply in love with Skyfire.

Microsoft to launch 2 iPhone killers at CES in January 2010

winmosidekick You wouldn’t expect to hear such Microsoft rumors from a source such as 9to5mac which is an Apple blog, but they sound pretty confident that Microsoft plans to announce two slider smartphones from Project Pink at CES in January of 2010. One of them will be squircle in shape like last generation Zunes and has the code name ‘Turtle’, while the other one, code named ‘Pure’ has a candy bar shape. Both will have slide out keyboards just like Danger’s Sidekick (Microsoft acquired Danger around a year ago).

Microsoft’s patent for gesture based messaging system

<Category: Microsoft, Windows, Windows Mobile> No comment

Windows Mobile 7 Not much is known about Windows Mobile 7 at this point. The most recent update has been from Stephen Chapman on Microsoft seeking testers for Windows Mobile 7 Search and Browser teams. I recently stumbled across this interesting patent based on messaging system controllable by gestures. Microsoft applied for a patent for Controlling an Integrated Messaging System Using Gestures which says:

Methods and apparatus for displaying and interacting with messages are described. Messages are displayed using one of a number of different visualization schemes provided. A user can interact with messages or change the selected visualization scheme using gestures and the mapping of gestures to particular actions is different for different visualization schemes. In an embodiment the messages are received via integrated messaging channels and messages are classified using a number of properties. Each of the visualization schemes has a different way of graphically representing messages and each scheme is adapted to emphasize a different combination of message properties.
