Microsoft released the 6th Platform Preview of Internet Explorer 9 for developers, a few days ago at PDC 2010. In line with all previous platform previews, this build doesn’t have a proper UI for normal use since it’s aimed towards developers. Microsoft must think developers have no life. But they have leaked out a secret method to upgrade Internet Explorer 9 Beta to the platform preview 6 engine to gain all the new features and improvements of it while retaining the new UI. The instructions were handed out to Ars Technica by Microsoft, but we’ve made it even more easier to do so, along with a downloadable package that you can just extract and use if you don’t want to go into the technical mess. According to IEbest, the site that previously released a video claiming to be of Internet Explorer 9, they’re planning to release a beta installer today, 2 days before Microsoft’s official launch. We had our doubts about the video though, as the UI shown in it was absolutely bad. The tab location was pathetic. Read more...

Apple introduced FaceTime with iPhone 4 and now this service is also available with the fourth generation iPod touch. It is expected that FaceTime will also be available on other Apple devices like iPad and Mac. According to French site Mac4Ever, FaceTime video calling will come with iLife 11. The interesting thing about this news is the Mac4Ever mentioned that apart from Mac, FaceTime will also come to the Windows platform. FaceTime would be integrated into iChat on Mac OS X but we have no information on how it would work with Windows. We just hope it’s not integrated into iTunes. Read more...

Just when you think that a WWDC event went quietly without Apple taking any shots at Microsoft or Apple stopped creating Get a Mac ads, Microsoft adds more fuel to the fire with a unbiased comparison of PC vs. Mac. The webpage, part of the Windows 7 website, falls under the compare area, where you can compare different Windows 7 editions, or Windows versions or even get help in deciding between a PC and a Mac.

The great thing about SATA hard drives is that you don’t have to mess around with the jumpers to change drives from slave to master or master to slave. I was installing Windows Home Server ‘Vail’ today and got stuck on this issue where it showed my primary hard drive, which is just 80GB, as the primary and would refuse to run the installation since WHS ‘Vail’ requires at least 160GB on the primary drive. My 1TB hard drive showed up as the secondary drive. Opening up my server just to change the settings wasn’t a pleasant thought either. But then I stumbled upon a simple fix. Here’s what I did.

Steve Ballmer isn’t one to be impressed easily. When he said that iPad sold more than he would have liked, it was obvious he doesn’t like it. He is representative of the general approach towards tablets/slates by Microsoft. They just don’t get them. Cramming a desktop operating system since more than a decade into a tablet hasn’t been fruitful for them, but still this is the strategy they’re gunning for to take down the iPad. Yes, it’s stupid but funny at the same time.
