WhatsApp users can now delete messages that are up to two days old

If you often send messages you regret on WhatsApp, there is some good news for you. The company is extending the time limit to delete a message from one hour, eight minutes, and 16 seconds to a whopping 60 hours. Now users will have plenty of time to mull over sent messages and delete them if they wish to.

Meta-owned WhatsApp extends the time limit to delete a message to 60 hours

The extended time limit was recently announced by WhatsApp in a tweet. The company said that users will now have “a little over 2 days to delete your messages from your chats after you hit send.” Luckily, this works for both private and group chats.

Prior to this change, users would only have a limited window of opportunity to delete a message. Not only limited, but an oddly specific window of one hour, eight minutes, and 16 seconds. To delete a message you have sent on the platform, tap and hold the message > tap the Delete button from the drop-down menu.

Though the extended time limit is good news for most users, a lot of people were left disgruntled that WhatsApp was not working on an edit button for messages instead. In addition, users want the company to remove the notification of a message after the message has been deleted.

The ability to edit and delete messages is already available in Telegram, without any limits. However, it is widely thought to be controversial as the functionalities can be used with malicious intent.

To make use of the extended time limit, both users in a private chat or all users in a group chat must have the latest version of WhatsApp installed on their device.

Recently, WhatsApp rolled out Reactions 2.0 for all users giving them the ability to react to messages using any emoji in a single or group chat. Reactions were initially launched in May alongside the platform increasing the limit of shared files from 100MB to 2GB and allowing users to add up to 512 people in a chat. The platform is also testing a new Mac Catalyst app with native Apple Silicon support.
