ChatGPT group chats are now available globally on the ChatGPT iOS app for Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users. The feature brings up to 20 people into one shared conversation where ChatGPT can help plan events, compare options, summarize messages, and keep everyone aligned. If you do not see the feature yet, update or restart the app.
On iPhone, group chats stay separate from your private conversations. Your personal memory is not shared, and ChatGPT only sees what is posted in that specific group. GPT-5.1 Auto powers the experience, supporting search, image uploads, file sharing, and content generation inside the chat.
Here is how to start and manage ChatGPT group chats on your iPhone.

Open the ChatGPT app on iOS and start a new chat.

Tap the people icon in the top right corner.

Select Start group chat to create a new group.

Share the invite link through iMessage or any other app to add people.
You can also turn an existing chat into a group. Tap the people icon again, start a group chat, and ChatGPT creates a copy where you can invite others. The original chat stays separate.
Group chats appear in a dedicated section of the sidebar on iPhone. This makes it easy to switch between private messages and shared conversations. Anyone with the invite link can join and see the full chat history, and you can reset or delete the link if you want to control access.
ChatGPT joins the conversation when it makes sense or when you mention “ChatGPT”. If you prefer, you can turn off automatic responses so it only replies when tagged. It can react with emojis, reference profile photos, and generate personalized images or notes for the group.
Only group-specific settings apply in these chats. ChatGPT does not use your personal custom instructions or memory. You can set group instructions that define tone, goals, or how you want responses structured.
From the group header, you can rename the chat, check members, remove people, or leave the group. Leaving removes the chat from your sidebar and stops notifications. Only the creator cannot be removed.
Rate limits apply only when ChatGPT responds. Human messages do not count toward usage limits, which helps larger groups collaborate without interruptions.
Safety protections stay active on mobile. Image uploads and links are screened, and you can report messages from inside the app. If a teen joins the group, ChatGPT uses additional content protections for everyone in the chat.
