Apple plans brighter OLED display for 20th anniversary iPhone

Apple is expected to mark the 20th anniversary iPhone with a major display upgrade. According to a new report, the company is preparing to introduce next-generation OLED technology that significantly increases brightness while improving power efficiency. This would represent one of the most notable screen enhancements since the debut of Super Retina XDR panels.

The report originates from ETNews, which explains that Apple is working with suppliers on a new blue phosphorescent OLED material that will allow for higher brightness levels without the same power drain as existing solutions. Current iPhones use fluorescent blue OLED, which has limitations in both efficiency and lifespan. By shifting to phosphorescent blue, Apple can boost overall panel brightness, reduce power consumption, and extend display durability.

For context, Apple has regularly introduced incremental improvements to iPhone displays, such as higher peak brightness, HDR performance, and ProMotion. However, a transition in OLED material science marks a larger technological step. Samsung and LG Display are reportedly preparing their production lines to meet Apple’s requirements, suggesting that the feature is timed for a high-profile launch.

This development aligns with Apple’s pattern of tying milestone devices to standout features. The iPhone X, launched for the 10th anniversary, introduced OLED displays, Face ID, and the edge-to-edge design. For the 20th anniversary, a brighter and more efficient OLED panel would serve as a similar generational marker.

It remains unclear whether Apple will limit the new OLED technology to the Pro models or expand it across the lineup. In recent years, features such as ProMotion and LTPO have been restricted to higher-end models before reaching the standard versions later. If the company follows the same strategy, the 20th anniversary Pro models may be the first to adopt the brighter OLED panels.
