Google Gemini adds AI-powered Storybooks to help kids read and imagine

Google has launched a new Storybooks feature for Gemini that turns a child’s imagination into custom-illustrated stories in seconds. Designed to promote reading and creativity, Gemini Storybooks is now available on the web and in the Gemini mobile app for signed-in users in the US who have opted into the Gemini Advanced experience.

The feature allows parents or children to enter a prompt like “a dinosaur who loves to bake cakes” and Gemini will instantly generate a story with original text and images. Users can then edit the details, rephrase the story, or generate illustrations in different styles before saving the final version as a personalized digital book. Storybooks are stored in the Gemini app and can be accessed across devices.

Unlike traditional children’s books, these AI-generated stories are tailored to specific themes, interests, or teaching goals. Whether it’s helping a child build reading confidence or just creating bedtime stories that reflect their unique personality, the feature adapts to different reading levels and tones. The Storybooks are created using Google’s Imagen 2 text-to-image model, which helps render diverse scenes, characters, and emotions based on the prompt. At the moment, they are available in English only.

Parents also have the ability to guide story development. They can revise plot elements, adjust language complexity, or regenerate images if needed. The stories remain private to the user’s Google account and are not used to train the model. Storybooks can be shared with family or printed out as PDFs, though the experience is optimized for screen reading.

Gemini Storybooks joins a growing list of AI tools aimed at education and creative development. Unlike generic story generators, it blends large language models with fine-tuned image creation to provide a fully illustrated, narrative experience. The launch is part of Google’s broader push to make Gemini more useful for everyday tasks, particularly for families with children.

To try Gemini Storybooks, users must be subscribed to Gemini Advanced, which is powered by the Gemini 1.5 Pro model. The feature is currently limited to users in the US, but Google may expand it to other regions and languages in future updates. As with other generative tools, results may vary, but the company has built in safeguards to ensure age-appropriate content.
