Apple debuts M5 Pro and M5 Max with 18-core CPU, up to 40-core GPU, and 4x AI performance

Apple has announced M5 Pro and M5 Max, its most advanced chips yet for the MacBook Pro. Built on a new Apple designed Fusion Architecture, the chips focus heavily on AI compute, graphics performance, and higher unified memory bandwidth for demanding workflows.

New Fusion Architecture

M5 Pro and M5 Max introduce Apple’s new Fusion Architecture, which connects two third generation 3 nanometer dies into a single system on a chip. The design integrates the CPU, GPU, Media Engine, unified memory controller, Neural Engine, and Thunderbolt 5 controllers into one tightly coupled package.

This approach enables higher bandwidth and lower latency communication between components, improving performance without sacrificing power efficiency.

18-core CPU with super cores

Both chips feature a new 18 core CPU design with six super cores and 12 all new performance cores. Apple says the super core delivers the world’s fastest single threaded CPU performance, supported by improved front end bandwidth, a new cache hierarchy, and enhanced branch prediction.

The additional performance cores are optimized for multithreaded pro workloads. Combined, the new CPU architecture delivers up to 30 percent faster performance compared to the previous generation and up to 2.5x higher multithreaded performance than M1 Pro and M1 Max.

Next-generation GPU with Neural Accelerators

The GPU architecture scales up to 20 cores on M5 Pro and up to 40 cores on M5 Max. Each GPU core includes a Neural Accelerator, significantly increasing AI compute capability.

Apple says M5 Pro and M5 Max deliver over 4x the peak GPU compute for AI compared to the previous generation, and over 6x compared to M1 Pro and M1 Max. Graphics performance is up to 20 percent higher than M4 Pro and M4 Max, with up to 35 percent gains in apps using ray tracing.

This allows faster AI image generation, quicker large language model prompt processing, and improved performance in 3D rendering and visual effects workflows.

Higher unified memory and bandwidth

Unified memory bandwidth increases to up to 307GB/s on M5 Pro and up to 614GB/s on M5 Max. M5 Pro supports up to 64GB of unified memory, while M5 Max supports up to 128GB.

M5 Pro chip

The higher bandwidth benefits AI model training, complex simulations, large dataset processing, and high resolution video editing. The faster 16 core Neural Engine further accelerates on device AI features and Apple Intelligence.

Advanced technologies on chip

M5 Pro and M5 Max include Apple’s latest Media Engine with hardware accelerated H.264, HEVC, AV1 decode, and ProRes encode and decode. Thunderbolt 5 controllers are integrated directly on chip, with each port supported by its own custom controller.

The chips also support Memory Integrity Enforcement, an always on memory safety feature designed to improve security without reducing performance.

With M5 Pro and M5 Max, Apple is continuing its push into high performance computing for laptops, combining CPU speed, GPU scale, and AI acceleration in a single architecture optimized for pro workloads.
