Apple may finally be preparing to enter the smart display market with a dedicated device for the home. New reports suggest the long rumored Apple HomePad could launch in 2026, giving Apple Home users a central display for managing smart devices, widgets, and communication features across the household.
While Amazon and Google have offered smart displays for years, Apple has never released a screen based controller for its smart home platform. The Apple HomePad is expected to fill that gap by acting as a shared household device that combines a touchscreen interface with Apple Home controls, Apple Intelligence features, and deeper Siri integration.
Reports suggest the device is internally codenamed J490 and could feature a square 7 inch display with thin bezels. The HomePad may come in black or white and could ship in two versions. One version would be designed for wall mounting while another would sit on a countertop using a speaker base, similar to how a smart display functions in a kitchen or living room.
Under the hood, leaks indicate the Apple HomePad may run on the A18 chip, the same processor used in the iPhone 16 lineup. Using this chip would allow the device to run Apple Intelligence features directly on device, improving response times and enabling more advanced Siri interactions for smart home tasks.
The device is also rumored to include a front facing ultra wide camera with Center Stage support for FaceTime calls. Face ID could also be included, allowing the HomePad to recognize who is using the display and automatically switch profiles for different members of the household. This would allow personalized widgets, reminders, calendars, and smart home controls to appear depending on who is in front of the device.
Apple is also reportedly developing a new operating system specifically for the HomePad. The software, internally codenamed “Charismatic,” is expected to focus on shared household functionality. The interface may feature customizable widgets, clock faces, and quick access panels for Apple Home accessories such as lights, cameras, thermostats, and locks.
The long delay around the Apple HomePad appears to be closely tied to Siri. Apple reportedly wanted the device to launch alongside a major upgrade to Siri powered by large language models. Earlier rumors suggested the device could launch in 2025, but those plans were pushed back as Apple continued working on the next generation Siri experience.
Recent reports indicate that a redesigned Siri may debut with iOS 26.4 or iOS 26.5. If that timeline holds, the Apple HomePad could follow shortly after, potentially launching sometime in 2026 once the new AI powered assistant is ready.
Another rumor suggests the device could arrive later in the year. Apple prototype collector and occasional leaker Kosutami recently hinted that the HomePad may launch in the fall. The message was cryptic, referencing “Autumn” and “Home integrated with Pad,” which many observers interpret as a reference to the Apple HomePad or Apple HomeHub device. The leaker later followed it up with “HomePad at Fall.”
Kosutami has a relatively small but notable history of Apple related leaks. They previously shared details about Apple Watch FineWoven bands before launch and correctly suggested the iPhone 15 lineup would move to USB-C. While not every claim has proven accurate, the leaker is still considered worth watching when it comes to prototype hardware information.
Some rumors describe the Apple HomeHub as a portable tablet style device that can move around the home while providing access to widgets, Apple Home controls, and communication features. Future versions could reportedly expand on this concept with deeper AI functionality and even accessories such as a robotic arm designed to keep the display facing the user.
Apple is also expected to expand its broader smart home strategy in 2026. Reports suggest the company is exploring new Apple Home accessories such as smart security cameras and a doorbell camera. If those products launch alongside the Apple HomePad, the display could become the central hub that ties the entire Apple Home ecosystem together.
For now, Apple has not officially announced the Apple HomePad or any HomeHub device. However, the increasing number of leaks, references in software code, and reports about Apple Intelligence powered Siri upgrades suggest the company may finally be close to bringing its first smart home display to market.
