macOS 27 Golden Gate beta 3 adds two new animated wallpapers and screensavers: Golden Gate Sunset and Golden Gate Night. Both feature motion effects on the Lock Screen when unlocking your Mac and can be set as a screensaver, marking a departure from the abstract Celosia design that shipped with earlier betas.

Golden Gate Sunset depicts waves breaking on the rocks near the Golden Gate Bridge, while Golden Gate Night shows cars driving across the bridge. The photorealistic approach represents Apple’s first attempt to visually align the OS name with its default wallpaper, a shift from the generic, curve-based Celosia design that some users found disconnected from the “Golden Gate” branding.
This year Apple unified wallpapers across iOS 27 and macOS 27 Golden Gate for the first time, using variations of the same Celosia design across all platforms. The new wallpapers demonstrate that unification does not require abandoning location-specific aesthetics; instead, both can coexist with themed options appearing as the OS matures.
The initial abstract wallpaper generated mixed reactions from the macOS community. By introducing these landmark-specific options in beta 3, Apple is returning to its tradition of featuring actual locations in macOS design. Past releases like Big Sur, Monterey, and Ventura all led with location-based imagery, so the photorealistic Golden Gate wallpapers restore a design principle that had become core to the OS identity.

The animated wallpapers respond dynamically to user interaction. When you unlock your Mac, the Golden Gate imagery responds with subtle motion effects that add visual interest. Both wallpapers can be used either as a desktop background or as a screensaver, giving users flexibility in where they want to see the animation. On displays with ProMotion support, the animations render at higher refresh rates for smoother motion.

Themed wallpaper options typically appear in later betas as the OS approaches stability and final polish. Additional Golden Gate variations, daytime or foggy imagery, could arrive before the September public release. With past updates, Apple has included several themed wallpaper options tied to the OS name, so more additions remain plausible.
macOS 27 Golden Gate is currently available as a developer beta preview. A public beta is coming later this month, with the final release expected this fall. Beyond wallpapers, the OS introduces improvements to Liquid Glass, the new Siri AI assistant with a dedicated app, and advanced Shortcuts with natural language processing support. The wallpaper refresh demonstrates that Apple remains willing to iterate on design details based on user response, even as the broader OS nears release.
