OpenAI released ChatGPT Work today alongside the full rollout of its GPT-5.6 model family. ChatGPT Work is an agent with built-in Codex that can complete tasks across web, mobile, and desktop by reading data from your apps, executing multi-step workflows independently, and working in the background across devices.
The new agent can tap into local files and apps or use an embedded browser to access websites and online tools. Plugins let you connect external apps and systems directly to ChatGPT Work, while a new Sites beta lets you build interactive reports, live dashboards, and web apps. Tasks can be started on your phone, scheduled to run on your Mac in the background, and checked from any device.
GPT-5.6 Models and Pricing
OpenAI rolled out three tiers of GPT-5.6:
- Sol (flagship): $5 per 1M input tokens, $30 per 1M output tokens
- Terra (balanced, 2× cheaper than GPT-5.5): $2.50 per 1M input tokens, $15 per 1M output tokens
- Luna (fast and affordable): $1 per 1M input tokens, $6 per 1M output tokens
Sol is OpenAI’s strongest model to date, with improvements in coding, biology, and cybersecurity. Sol can inspect and refine rendered interfaces, catching visual and functional issues, not just generating underlying code. ChatGPT Work is available immediately for Pro, Enterprise, and Edu subscribers; Plus and Business plan holders get access within days.
Desktop App Consolidation
OpenAI is merging its Codex app into ChatGPT on desktop, available now for Mac and Windows. Users with Codex installed can update it to the new ChatGPT desktop client. The existing ChatGPT desktop app is being rebranded as ChatGPT Classic. ChatGPT Atlas, OpenAI’s standalone desktop browser, will be discontinued on August 9, 2026.
GPT-Live Voice Arrives
OpenAI also rolled out GPT-Live, a new generation of voice models designed to feel more conversational. The models support simultaneous listening and speaking, you can interrupt or acknowledge responses with natural phrases like “mhmm” without waiting for the AI to finish. GPT-Live, 1 is the default for Go, Plus, and Pro users; GPT-Live, 1 mini goes to Free users. Video and screen-sharing support is coming soon.
The full rollout caps a two-week delay imposed by government review; OpenAI ran a limited preview starting June 26 before broader availability was cleared. GPT-5.4 will be retired on July 23. GPT-5.5 remains available.
