Apple Brings Madden NFL 27 to Arcade Just Before NFL Season

Madden NFL 27 Arcade Edition launches August 6 on Apple Arcade, marking the first time EA’s flagship sports franchise has come to a subscription service as its primary distribution model. The release arrives just before the new NFL pre-season kicks off, positioning Apple’s gaming service as a destination for football fans heading into the season.

The Arcade version is a full Madden title with both Franchise and Quick Play modes, drawing player ratings directly from real NFL performances. Franchise mode operates on a weekly story engine that generates season-shifting narratives, letting players take the GM seat, win over fan bases, and build championship teams. The game supports controllers across iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV, and carries no ads or in-app purchases.

The Madden deal is significant for EA as this is the first time the franchise has arrived on a subscription service as its sole distribution model on mobile, without Ultimate Team microtransactions. EA’s Evan Dexter framed the move as a test of premium distribution: “Apple Arcade is the perfect home for Madden as a premium platform that matches the complete, no-compromise experience we’ve built.” Alex Rofman, Apple’s senior director of Apple Arcade, said it was a “dream come true” for the service, which now spans 200+ games across football, basketball, golf, and general gaming, all ad-free and without in-app purchases.

Apple is surrounding the Madden launch with a larger football lineup. Retro Bowl College+, a spinoff of the original 8-bit Retro Bowl, also launches August 6 and puts players in charge of one of 250 college programs. On September 3, NFL Retro Bowl ’27 adds a new Gauntlet Mode where armchair GMs start with limited resources and chase a 15-game win streak against other players for the highest score.

Beyond football, Apple is updating its existing sports roster. NBA 2K26 Arcade Edition now includes Tyrese Maxey as a Paragon player and adds the 2016, 2024 era to its Association mode. PGA TOUR Pro Golf gained a new course, Bear’s Best Atlanta. NFL Retro Bowl ’26 rolled out Historic Super Bowl challenges on July 16 built around memorable title games.

Apple Arcade also announced free sampling of select titles on the App Store without a subscription: PowerWash Simulator, Mini Motorways, Cooking Mama: Cuisine!, and Play-Doh World. The service costs $6.99 per month or comes bundled into any Apple One plan.

For a $6.99 monthly service bundled into Apple One, this is a genuine shift in how premium sports games reach mainstream audiences. Madden without microtransactions and built for cross-device play raises the bar for subscription gaming on Apple devices.
