Apple’s 7-Inch Smart Home Hub Is Nearly Ready for Launching By Early 2027

Apple’s 7-inch smart home hub is nearly ready to ship, with a launch window between October 2026 and early 2027. The device has reportedly been finished for months, but Apple held it back because the smarter version of Siri it was built around wasn’t ready. Now that Siri AI is tied to iOS 27, the blocker is gone.

The hub, codenamed J490, runs a custom operating system internally called “Charismatic,” which is built on tvOS but purpose-built for shared household use rather than a single owner. Bloomberg describes the interface as a blend of tvOS and watchOS, with apps, icons, and widgets. It supports FaceTime, HomeKit control, home security monitoring, and customizable clock faces similar to Apple Watch.

Two physical form factors

Apple is developing the 7-inch device in two configurations. One sits on a half-dome-shaped base that resembles a screen-equipped HomePod mini, with a speaker integrated into the stand. The other mounts flush to a wall using a magnetic attachment system. Both use the same square 7-inch display and the same underlying software.

Facial recognition as the centerpiece

The defining feature is presence detection with facial recognition. The hub identifies who is standing in front of it, adjusts the size and type of information based on their distance from the screen, and surfaces that person’s calendar, notes, and other personalized content automatically. Multiple household members each get their own experience without touching the device. This is what separates it from simply propping an iPad on a stand, and the reason “Charismatic” is built for multi-user contexts rather than inheriting iOS’s single-owner model.

The original target was early 2025, which slipped to early 2026 when Apple Intelligence launched without the improved Siri it had promised. Apple then decided Siri’s underlying architecture needed a complete overhaul before it could support the ambient, conversational home control the hub was designed around. With that work now complete and shipping alongside Siri AI in iOS 27, Apple finally has the foundation to release a product that was reportedly ready at the hardware level well before today.

The rumored price is around $350, placing it above Amazon’s Echo Show 15 and Google’s Nest Hub Max. Apple’s privacy pitch, given that this device has a camera watching faces in your home all day, will need to be exceptionally clear at launch.

Apple has been absent from the smart home display category while Amazon and Google have iterated for years. A $350 device that recognizes your face and shows you your day without any input is a coherent pitch, but it only holds up if Siri AI performs consistently across every request a full household throws at it.
