In iOS 26, Apple has introduced the option to use AirPods as an external microphone when recording videos with the iPhone Camera app. This upgrade makes it possible to capture clearer audio even if you are standing away from the device. Instead of relying solely on the built-in iPhone mic, you can now get lapel-style recording quality directly from your AirPods. The feature is especially useful for vlogging, interviews, and social media content where sound matters as much as video.
Only certain models are supported, including AirPods 4, AirPods Pro 2, and AirPods Pro 3. With these, you can record wireless audio that syncs directly with your video, giving you freedom to move around while maintaining clear sound. Additionally, you can select from various mic modes, depending on your recording environment, to either emphasize voice clarity or capture ambient sound.
Here is how to use AirPods as a video recording microphone in iOS 26:
-
Make sure your AirPods 4, AirPods Pro 2, or AirPods Pro 3 are connected and in your ears.
-
Open the Camera app on your iPhone.
-
Switch to Video mode.
-
Swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen to open Control Center.
-
Tap Camera Controls at the top.
-
Under Audio & Video, tap Input and select your AirPods. You may also see Same as System as an option.
-
From the same screen, you can adjust microphone modes: Automatic lets the system decide, Standard applies default processing, Voice Isolation reduces background noise, and Wide Spectrum captures a fuller range of sounds.
-
Start recording by pressing the stem on your AirPods or tapping the record button in the Camera app. Press the stem again when you are done.
With AirPods set as your camera microphone, you can achieve professional-quality audio without carrying extra gear. Whether you are filming a tutorial, shooting a casual vlog, or recording an interview, this feature gives you better sound with minimal setup.
