The engineering gap between this generation and five years of the original is substantial. The new Ultra Wideband chip is the same component Apple placed in flagship iPhones and watches, and the performance delta in real-world finding scenarios is tangible. If you’ve used the original AirTag indoors or through obstacles, the 1.5x Precision Finding range improvement translates to noticeably faster, more reliable location data. The louder speaker is equally practical: at twice the audible distance, you’re far less likely to spend five minutes searching through a couch before hearing that distinctive chime.
The single AirTag is worth buying at $24, especially if you’re tracking just one or two items.
