Apple’s 18.8-inch foldable device likely delayed beyond 2026

Apple’s long-rumored larger foldable product is now expected to miss a 2026 production timeline, according to a new report from Korean supply chain sources. The device, believed to be a hybrid between an iPad and MacBook, had originally been targeted for mass production in late 2025. However, the timeline has reportedly slipped further and is now unlikely to begin before early 2027.

As reported by GF Securities’ lead analyst Jeff Pu, this delay appears tied to ongoing development challenges rather than production capacity. Apple is said to be working on both an iPhone-sized foldable and a larger foldable product. While work on the smaller iPhone foldable continues in parallel, the company has been more focused on the larger foldable, which is expected to debut first. Internally, it is being referred to as a 20.3-inch foldable device, possibly forming the basis for a future iPad or MacBook line. Its current prototype folds inward and is expected to support Apple Pencil input.

The foldable was originally intended to be a showcase for advanced display and hinge technologies, but Apple’s high durability and usability standards continue to push development timelines. Issues related to panel creasing, long-term reliability, and software adaptation are key reasons for the delay. Display suppliers involved in early testing have not yet received any concrete production schedules, further indicating that launch is not imminent.

This update aligns with broader supply chain reporting that suggests Apple is taking a cautious, long-term approach to foldable hardware. Rather than rush to market alongside Samsung or Huawei, the company appears focused on creating a distinct experience that meets its performance and longevity expectations. Analysts also expect the foldable to carry a premium price tag, likely placing it well above current iPad and MacBook models.

With the larger foldable pushed beyond 2026, attention may now shift back to the smaller foldable iPhone project. That device was previously rumored for 2026 or 2027, but could see further refinement depending on Apple’s broader product strategy.
