ChatGPT now works with CarPlay in iOS 26.4

Apple’s latest iOS 26.4 update quietly opens the door for a new kind of in-car experience, and OpenAI has moved fast to take advantage of it. ChatGPT is now available in CarPlay, letting users interact with the AI assistant hands-free while driving using a voice-first interface.

This change comes from Apple introducing support for voice-based conversational apps in CarPlay. It is a tightly controlled expansion, but a meaningful one. Instead of relying entirely on Siri, users now have the option to talk to third-party AI like ChatGPT directly from their car’s dashboard.

The ChatGPT CarPlay experience is intentionally minimal. Apple does not allow these apps to display text or images, which means everything is handled through voice. The interface is limited to a simple control screen with basic options like ending a session or muting the microphone. Beyond that, the interaction is entirely conversational.

This setup reflects Apple’s focus on safety. CarPlay apps have always been restricted to specific categories, and even with this update, the rules remain strict. Voice-based apps must follow predefined templates and avoid complex menus or visual distractions. ChatGPT fits within these limits by focusing only on spoken responses and task-based interactions.

There are a few trade-offs. ChatGPT on CarPlay is not designed for long, open-ended conversations. It works better for quick questions, simple requests, or getting information while on the road. There is also no wake word support, so users need to manually open the app before starting a conversation.

The integration does not extend to controlling car systems or iPhone settings either. It stays within a clear boundary as an informational assistant rather than a system-level tool. That keeps it aligned with Apple’s broader approach to CarPlay, where predictability matters more than flexibility.

To use ChatGPT in CarPlay, users need an iPhone running iOS 26.4 or later along with the latest version of the ChatGPT app. Once set up, it becomes another option alongside Siri for hands-free assistance while driving.

This update also hints at where Apple is heading next. With AI apps now allowed in CarPlay under strict conditions, the platform is slowly opening up without giving up control. At the same time, Apple is expected to deliver a more advanced Siri experience with iOS 27, which could reshape how built-in and third-party assistants coexist in the car.
