OpenAI adds instant checkout shopping to ChatGPT

OpenAI has introduced a new instant checkout system inside ChatGPT, transforming the app from an AI assistant into a direct shopping platform. The feature is powered by the new Agentic Commerce Protocol, developed in partnership with Stripe, and represents OpenAI’s first major step into AI-driven e-commerce.

Buy it in ChatGPT

The rollout begins in the United States, where Free, Plus, and Pro ChatGPT users can now make purchases directly in-chat. Initial availability includes Etsy sellers, allowing users to shop for unique, handmade items without leaving their conversation. Soon, Shopify merchants such as Glossier, SKIMS, and Spanx will also be supported, bringing recognizable brands into the ChatGPT ecosystem.

The system is designed around convenience and simplicity. Instead of redirecting customers to external websites, a “Buy” button appears inside the chat once a product is suggested. With a single tap, users can confirm their shipping address and payment details, and checkout instantly. The process removes the friction of switching between apps or browsers, while maintaining security and transparency.

Unlike traditional marketplaces, merchants retain full control over their operations. Payments, order fulfillment, and customer service remain handled by the seller. ChatGPT acts as a layer for product discovery and checkout, creating a bridge between conversational AI and existing e-commerce workflows. To encourage adoption, OpenAI has open-sourced the Agentic Commerce Protocol, making it easier for businesses and developers to integrate with minimal backend changes.

Future plans for the feature include multi-item carts, support for larger catalogs, international availability, and deeper integrations with payment and shipping providers. OpenAI has also hinted that its commerce features will evolve alongside its agent capabilities, meaning users may eventually be able to request products in natural language, compare prices, and manage multiple purchases in a single chat.

By integrating through the Agentic Commerce Protocol, sellers can tap into a growing audience of ChatGPT users who are already engaging with AI daily. The protocol is flexible enough to work with platforms like Etsy and Shopify, but can also extend to independent retailers who want to experiment with AI-driven sales.

OpenAI’s move also signals a shift in how people may view ChatGPT. The app is no longer just for productivity, creative help, or research – it is now becoming a transactional platform. With payments and shopping built into the experience, ChatGPT could increasingly serve as a one-stop environment where users get answers, generate content, and complete purchases all in the same session.

If successful, this rollout could set the stage for a broader transformation of online commerce. Instead of browsing product pages, future shoppers may simply describe what they want and complete their order instantly in chat. With Stripe handling the payment backbone and merchants controlling fulfillment, the model balances user convenience with seller autonomy.
