OpenAI has added virtual try-on to ChatGPT, so you can see how a piece of clothing or an accessory looks on you before you buy it. The feature launched globally on Thursday, along with a new Favorites option for saving products you find while shopping in the app.
Both features run on ChatGPT Images 2.5, the image model OpenAI released in September with up to 50 percent lower generation latency than ChatGPT Images 2.0. The announcement was covered in detail on TechCrunch.
Virtual Try-On Adds a Try On Button to ChatGPT Shopping Results
Try-on appears as a new “Try on” button in ChatGPT’s shopping results. Tap it and ChatGPT generates an image of you wearing the item, based on a photo you upload. A selfie or a full-body photo both work.
You can also bring in items from outside ChatGPT. The feature accepts these inputs:
- A selfie or full-body photo of you, used as the base image
- A product from ChatGPT’s shopping results, tried on with the Try on button
- An image of an item from anywhere else, such as a web screenshot, with a request to try it on
OpenAI says ChatGPT Images 2.5 produces more natural lighting and richer textures than earlier models, and follows editing instructions more reliably. Lighting and texture are what make a try-on image look believable, so those improvements apply directly here.
Favorites Saves Products to a Library Alongside Your Try-On Images
Favorites lets you save products you discover in ChatGPT to a Library in the app. Your try-on images are stored in the same Library, so a saved item and the photo of you wearing it stay together.
OpenAI also points to other ways ChatGPT can help with shopping. You can describe a style you want to try and ask ChatGPT to find the pieces that complete the look. You can also upload photos of a celebrity’s outfit and ask it to find the items they are wearing that are available to buy.
ChatGPT Now Competes With Pinterest and Google for Fashion Discovery
The outfit-photo search moves ChatGPT into territory that Pinterest and Google have dominated in recent years. Both are sources of fashion inspiration and discovery that convert to sales for online retailers.
OpenAI has had a mixed run with shopping in ChatGPT. Its instant checkout feature did not perform well, and the company had to pivot away from that idea.
Whether people will choose ChatGPT first for fashion browsing is still undecided, since Google launched its own virtual try-on feature in 2025.
