The US Department of Commerce cleared Anthropic to restore access to Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5, ending a nearly two-week suspension triggered by export control restrictions. The company had disabled both models on June 12 after the government issued an export-control directive. Access restoration began following high-level negotiations between Anthropic and the White House.

The clearance comes with conditions such as Anthropic must “proactively detect and address security risks associated with the models,” collaborate with the government on protocols for future releases, and report any “malicious activity” it discovers. These commitments formalize a safety-first framework that structures Anthropic’s compliance obligations as the models re-enter circulation.
Anthropic launched Claude Fable 5 on June 9, positioning it as a Mythos-class model for general use with capabilities exceeding any previously public model. Within three days, Amazon researchers published findings suggesting prompts could extract information potentially useful in cyberattacks. That publication, paired with conversations between Amazon CEO Andy Jassy and the White House, reportedly triggered the export-control directive.
On June 12, the Commerce Department ordered that no foreign national, inside or outside the United States, could access the models. Anthropic received 90 minutes to comply. The company disabled both Fable 5 and Mythos 5 entirely rather than attempt selective restrictions.
Anthropic has not confirmed whether Fable 5 will be available globally or only in the United States, nor whether access returns all at once or through a gradual rollout. That uncertainty affects enterprises and developers who spent the intervening weeks building contingency plans or switching to alternatives.
Fable 5 will be available starting today, Wednesday, July 1, to users globally on the Claude Platform, Claude.ai, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork. For Pro, Max, Team, and select Enterprise plans,1 Fable 5 will be included for up to 50% of weekly usage limits through July 7, after which it will be available via usage credits. Anthropic said that it will re-enable access on AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Foundry, however a timeline has not been provided.
