Google announces Pixel Buds 2a with active noise cancellation, Gemini AI, and affordable price

Google has introduced the Pixel Buds 2a, a new addition to its wireless audio lineup, designed to deliver premium features at a lower price point. Announced alongside the Pixel 10 series and Pixel Watch 4, the Pixel Buds 2a focus on active noise cancellation, improved audio quality, and deep AI integration through the Tensor A1 chip.

The earbuds are positioned as a cost-effective alternative to Apple’s AirPods, making Google’s audio ecosystem more accessible without sacrificing key features like AI-powered assistance and noise reduction.

Design and comfort

The Pixel Buds 2a continue Google’s compact, ergonomic design language with an emphasis on all-day comfort. They are lighter than previous Pixel Buds, feature a low-profile fit, and are available in multiple finishes. The earbuds are IPX4 water and sweat resistant, making them suitable for workouts and daily use.

Audio performance and ANC

The Pixel Buds 2a include active noise cancellation (ANC) and transparency mode, features typically reserved for more expensive earbuds. Audio is powered by the Tensor A1 chip, which enhances clarity, reduces background noise, and improves overall sound performance.

Gemini AI further expands functionality by allowing contextual voice prompts, smart replies, and proactive assistance. Users can access playback controls, translations, and reminders directly through voice commands.

Battery and charging

Battery performance offers up to 7 hours of listening time with ANC enabled and up to 30 hours with the charging case. The case supports USB-C charging and is designed with improved repairability compared to earlier Pixel Buds models, which means you can replace the battery. Quick charging provides around 2 hours of playback in just 10 minutes.

Connectivity and features

The Pixel Buds 2a use Bluetooth 5.3 for fast, stable connections and support multipoint connectivity for pairing with two devices at once. Other features include:

  • Google Fast Pair for quick setup
  • Adaptive Sound that adjusts volume based on surroundings
  • Real-time translation when paired with Pixel phones
  • Low-latency mode for gaming and video playback

Colors and finishes

Google is offering the Pixel Buds 2a in three colors: Charcoal, White, and Light Green. The charging case matches the earbud colors and has a more rounded, durable design.

Price and release date

The Pixel Buds 2a are available for pre-order now, with official availability beginning August 28. Pricing is set at $129, making them significantly more affordable than Apple’s AirPods Pro while still offering ANC and AI-powered features.

A challenge to AirPods

With active noise cancellation, AI-powered assistance, long battery life, and a competitive price, the Pixel Buds 2a aim directly at Apple’s dominance in the wireless audio market. While AirPods still hold an advantage in seamless iOS integration, Google is clearly working to strengthen its own ecosystem with compelling hardware at multiple price points.
