Apple is reportedly preparing to launch a refreshed version of the HomePod mini with an updated chip, marking its first internal hardware upgrade since the device’s introduction in late 2020. The revision is not expected to alter the speaker’s design or introduce major new features, but it will improve performance, efficiency, and potentially lay the groundwork for future software capabilities.
According to MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris, who has a track record of uncovering Apple hardware and software details ahead of release, the current HomePod mini’s S5 chip will be replaced with a newer processor. This could be the S9 chip from the Apple Watch Series 9 or another recent in-house chip, enabling faster Siri responses, smoother smart home integration, and enhanced processing for computational audio features like adaptive sound tuning.
While the HomePod mini is already known for delivering impressive audio performance for its size, an updated chip could also improve how it handles advanced HomeKit automation, threaded Matter devices, and multi-room audio synchronization with other AirPlay 2 speakers. This could make voice commands more instantaneous and reduce latency when controlling smart home accessories. Apple may also use the new processor to improve background processing for tasks like personal requests, intercom features, and music handoff between devices.
This internal refresh aligns with Apple’s broader strategy of quietly updating the chips in its accessories to extend their lifespan and enable upcoming software features. The company recently made similar moves with devices like the second-generation AirPods Pro, which received a USB-C charging case alongside an H2 chip upgrade, and the Apple TV 4K, which now runs on a more efficient A15 Bionic chip.
Despite the hardware change, the HomePod mini’s price is expected to remain the same, keeping it as Apple’s most affordable smart speaker. For many users, the appeal of this refresh will be in its future-proofing, as a more capable chip ensures that the device can support upcoming Home app and Siri improvements without slowing down. Apple is also expected to maintain the same range of colors, which currently includes white, space gray, blue, yellow, and orange.
The updated HomePod mini could be announced later this year, possibly alongside new iPads or Macs. Given that the original model is still a strong seller and a key entry point into Apple’s smart home ecosystem, this refresh appears to be more about refining an already successful product rather than reinventing it.
