iOS 26.5 and iPadOS 26.5 public beta 2 adds Maps discovery and RCS encryption testing

Apple has released the second public beta of iOS 26.5 and iPadOS 26.5, rolling out the update to testers just a day after the developer beta. The release continues Apple’s late-cycle refinement phase, focusing on services and system features rather than visible UI changes.

Users enrolled in Apple’s beta program can install the update directly through Settings after opting in via Apple’s beta software program. This release aligns closely with the developer beta 2 build, including backend adjustments and feature testing that Apple is preparing for broader availability.

The most noticeable change in this cycle is coming through Apple Maps. A new Suggested Places feature is now integrated into search, offering location-based recommendations when users look up destinations. The goal is to surface relevant spots faster, especially for nearby discovery and local exploration within Maps search results.

Apple is also continuing internal testing around advertising in Apple Maps. While not active for public users yet, the beta includes supporting framework changes and an explainer tied to how ads may appear in future Maps experiences.

Messaging is another key focus area in this update. Apple is again testing end-to-end encryption for RCS conversations between iPhone and Android users. This is part of a broader effort to modernize cross-platform messaging security, though it remains in a controlled testing phase.

On the subscription side, iOS 26.5 is also linked to early experiments around monthly payment options for annual subscriptions, offering potential discounted structures tied to longer commitments. This is not finalized, but it signals Apple is still iterating on App Store monetization mechanics.
