Apple will project iPad art onto Sydney Opera House

Apple is turning the Sydney Opera House into a giant digital canvas later this month, with artwork created on iPad set to illuminate the landmark’s famous sails. The initiative is part of a new yearlong collaboration between Apple and the Sydney Opera House focused on supporting creativity, arts education, and emerging Australian artists.

The first major project from the partnership is a projection titled “Illuminating Creativity,” which will display iPad created artwork on the eastern Bennelong sails of the Sydney Opera House from March 25 to March 27, 2026. The installation will showcase both static illustrations and moving digital artwork designed using Procreate on iPad.

The iPad art Sydney Opera House projection will feature work from 10 emerging Australian artists who created their pieces using iPad, Apple Pencil, and the Procreate illustration app. Their designs will be displayed across the iconic sails, transforming one of the world’s most recognizable architectural landmarks into a large scale public gallery.

Members of the public will also have the chance to contribute to the projection. From March 9 to March 15, Apple Store locations across Australia will host free Today at Apple sessions focused on creating digital artwork with iPad and Procreate. Participants can design their own pieces and submit them for a chance to have their artwork included in the final projection.

Selected artwork from both the commissioned artists and public submissions will be curated and displayed on the Sydney Opera House sails during the event. The projection is scheduled to begin at 8:30 p.m. on March 25 and at 8:00 p.m. on March 26 and March 27.

The iPad art Sydney Opera House event is also the launch of a broader 12 month collaboration between Apple and the cultural landmark. Apple will support creative programming at the Opera House, including initiatives within the venue’s Centre for Creativity and a new international children’s festival planned for later in 2026.

Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, Greg Joswiak, said the collaboration reflects Apple’s long history of building tools designed to empower creativity. The company views iPad and Apple Pencil as platforms that allow anyone, from beginners to professional artists, to create and share digital artwork.

The project also highlights Procreate, one of the most widely used digital art apps on iPad. Developed by Australian company Savage Interactive, Procreate has become a popular illustration tool for artists and designers around the world, especially when paired with Apple Pencil.

By projecting Procreate artwork onto the sails of the Sydney Opera House, the initiative demonstrates how digital art created on a tablet can scale from a handheld device to a monumental public display. The event also highlights how iPad continues to play a central role in modern creative workflows for illustrators, animators, and designers.
