iPhone 17 base model to get 6.3-inch display, matching iPhone 16 Pro

Apple is set to launch its iPhone 17 lineup this September, and one of the biggest updates for the base model is a larger display. According to multiple sources, including leaker Digital Chat Station and display analyst Ross Young, the standard iPhone 17 will feature a 6.3-inch screen. That’s a bump from the 6.1-inch display on the iPhone 16 and matches the current iPhone 16 Pro.

Last year, Apple increased the screen sizes on its Pro models, pushing the iPhone 16 Pro to 6.3 inches and the Pro Max to 6.9 inches. Meanwhile, the base iPhone 16 stayed at 6.1 inches. This year, Apple is finally giving the base model a bigger screen, which has been a popular request among users who prefer larger displays.

Hints about this change have popped up in case leaks, too. For example, Spigen accidentally revealed that cases for the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro might fit both models, suggesting they will share similar dimensions.

Beyond the screen size, the base iPhone 17 is expected to keep the same overall design and hardware as the iPhone 16. It should still run on the A18 chip and include 8GB of RAM. But there are a few important upgrades rumored to be coming.

One major change could be the introduction of a 120Hz ProMotion display, which would be a big step up from the 60Hz panel on the iPhone 16. This means smoother scrolling and better overall responsiveness. The front camera is also expected to get an upgrade to 24 megapixels, doubling the resolution and promising sharper selfies and clearer video calls.

Apple’s iPhone 17 lineup as a whole is shaping up to be a major refresh. Alongside the base model, Apple is rumored to be dropping the Plus version and introducing an ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air with a 6.6-inch display. Leaked dummy units show a horizontal “runway strip” camera bump on the Air, while the Pro models are expected to get a wide camera bar and a possible 12GB RAM upgrade.
