iPhone 20 could get under-display selfie camera

Apple is reportedly planning a major design shift for what may be the iPhone 20 lineup in 2027, introducing an under-display selfie camera and Face ID system that would eliminate all visible cutouts. The move could finally deliver the full-screen iPhone design the company has been pursuing for over a decade.

Before that, the iPhone 18 Pro models expected in 2026 are rumored to include a hole-punch display with under-display Face ID sensors. The 2027 generation would take that concept further by placing both the camera and the sensors completely beneath the screen.

Leaker Digital Chat Station, posting on Weibo, claims that Apple’s development of under-display camera technology is on schedule for adoption in 2027. The company is said to be working with suppliers such as LG Innotek to create “freeform optic” lens systems designed to reduce distortion and improve light transmittance. This approach could address one of the biggest drawbacks of under-display cameras: poor image quality caused by display layers blocking light.

If accurate, the iPhone 20 lineup could mark Apple’s first truly all-screen design with no Dynamic Island or visible punch-hole. The change would coincide with the brand’s 20th anniversary iPhone, and some reports suggest Apple might skip the iPhone 19 name entirely, similar to its jump from iPhone 8 to iPhone X in 2017. Alongside the under-display selfie camera, the iPhone 20 is also rumored to feature solid-state buttons for improved durability and water resistance.

This rumored redesign represents the culmination of years of experimentation in display engineering and front-facing sensor miniaturization. While Android manufacturers have already released under-display camera phones, Apple’s focus on image fidelity likely delayed its rollout. If the technology meets Apple’s standards by 2027, the iPhone 20 could finally bring the seamless “single slab of glass” design long envisioned by Jony Ive and Apple’s design team.
