Logitech launches Signature Slim Solar+ K980 keyboard for Mac

Logitech has announced the new Signature Slim Solar+ K980 for Mac, a Bluetooth keyboard designed for Apple users with integrated light-powered charging. Instead of depending on disposable batteries or regular USB-C top-ups, the Solar+ system harvests energy from natural and indoor light so the keyboard stays ready under normal use. For Mac users who want fewer cables and less battery management, this offers a cleaner, low-maintenance setup.

Logitech’s press release confirms that the keyboard is powered by Logi LightCharge, a proprietary light-harvesting strip and ultra-efficient power design paired with a long-life rechargeable cell. Once fully charged, the K980 can keep working for up to four months in complete darkness, so even dim desk environments or overnight use are covered. The company also highlights a sustainability angle with the use of certified post-consumer recycled plastics and a battery engineered for long service life, which reduces waste over time.

The Signature Slim Solar+ K980 for Mac uses a macOS-optimized layout with familiar modifier keys, shortcuts, and function row behavior that mirrors Apple’s typing experience. Logitech sells a universal multi-OS printed layout version for cross-platform users, but the For Mac model adopts macOS-specific legends and mappings so it feels native on a Mac, iPad, or iPhone. That means you get the right labels and default functions out of the box while keeping universal Bluetooth compatibility.

Customization is handled by the Logi Options+ app on macOS, which lets you remap keys, create Smart Actions automations, and fine-tune the function row to your workflow. Logitech’s lineup also introduces an AI Launch Key for instant access to tools like Copilot, Gemini, or ChatGPT; however, that AI Launch Key is not available on the For Mac version. Even without it, Options+ gives Mac users granular control over shortcuts and per-app profiles, and if you pair a compatible Logitech mouse, you can use Logitech Flow to move between devices more fluidly.

For desk ergonomics and noise, the K980 sticks to a slim, laptop-style scissor mechanism with quiet presses and a full-size layout including a number pad. It supports Easy-Switch for pairing with up to three devices and switching among them quickly, which is useful if you split time between a MacBook, an iPad, and an iPhone. Compared to Apple’s Magic Keyboard, Logitech’s approach trades the need for periodic cable charging for the convenience of light-powered operation, while adding multi-device pairing as standard.

Logitech lists the price at $99.99 for both the universal and Mac variants. Availability starts this month via Logitech’s online store, authorized sellers, and on Amazon. Note that Logitech specifies the For Mac variant is available in North America, while the universal multi-OS printed layout model is available globally; if you are outside North America and want macOS legends, check retailer listings closely or consider the universal version if it better matches your setup needs.

From a longevity standpoint, Logitech says the rechargeable cell is designed to last up to 10 years, which aligns with the Solar+ promise of minimal upkeep over time. For business deployments, a separate K980 for Business SKU adds Logi Bolt USB-C receiver support and IT fleet management via Logitech Sync, but home and individual Mac users will likely opt for the standard Mac model with Bluetooth and Options+ customization.
