Apple unveils new 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 chip and major AI boost

Apple has announced a new 14-inch MacBook Pro powered by its latest M5 chip, marking what the company calls “the next big leap in AI for the Mac.” The new model delivers up to 3.5x faster AI performance, 1.6x faster graphics, faster storage speeds, and up to 24 hours of battery life. It ships with macOS Tahoe and starts at $1,599 in space black and silver.

According to Apple’s press release, the M5 chip introduces a 10-core GPU with a Neural Accelerator in every core, enabling a major increase in AI and graphics capabilities. The CPU is faster and more efficient, while the enhanced Neural Engine and expanded memory bandwidth improve everything from app launches to running local large language models. The device also includes faster SSD technology for importing RAW files or exporting large videos and retains the Liquid Retina XDR display, six-speaker sound system, and Center Stage camera that MacBook Pro users expect.

As Apple highlighted in its announcement, the M5 chip drives significant real-world gains across professional and creative workflows. The new GPU architecture delivers up to 1.6x higher frame rates in games and up to 20 percent faster multithreaded CPU performance for tasks like compiling code. With 150GB/s of unified memory bandwidth and storage options up to 4TB, the new MacBook Pro can handle complex data models and AI tasks on-device without cloud processing.

Compared to earlier models, Apple says the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 offers major upgrades:

  • Up to 7.7x faster AI video enhancement in Topaz Video compared to the 13-inch M1 model
  • Up to 6.8x faster 3D rendering in Blender
  • Up to 3.2x higher frame rates in gaming
  • Up to 2.1x faster code compilation in Xcode

For users upgrading from Intel or M1-based Macs, Apple claims up to 86x faster AI performance and 30x faster GPU speeds with ray tracing, along with up to 5.5x faster CPU performance. The new model also delivers up to 14 hours longer battery life than Intel-based systems and four hours longer than M1 models, maintaining the same performance whether plugged in or on battery power.

The device integrates Apple Intelligence, which enhances macOS Tahoe with AI-driven tools for productivity and communication. Features like Live Translation in Messages and FaceTime, intelligent Shortcuts, and improved Spotlight search aim to make everyday workflows more seamless. Tahoe’s new design includes the Liquid Glass interface, transparent menu bar, and additional personalization options for folders and widgets.

Apple continues its environmental focus, stating that the new 14-inch MacBook Pro is made with 45 percent recycled content by weight, including 100 percent recycled aluminum and rare earth elements. It also uses renewable energy during manufacturing and comes in fiber-based recyclable packaging.

Pre-orders for the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 are now open on Apple.com, with availability beginning October 22. It’s priced at $1,599 ($1,499 with education savings). AppleCare+ and AppleCare One coverage options are available, and customers can trade in existing Macs toward purchase credit.
