Apple has released macOS Tahoe beta 5 to developers, continuing its schedule of weekly pre-release updates as it moves closer to the final public version expected this fall. This build follows beta 4, which was seeded one week ago, and is available via the Software Update section in System Settings for users enrolled in the Apple Developer Program.
macOS Tahoe, also known as macOS 15, introduces some of the most visually striking and functional changes to the Mac experience in recent years. One of the most prominent features is the new Liquid Glass interface, which refreshes the system’s appearance with translucent panels, subtle lighting effects, and more layered depth throughout the UI. The change is most noticeable in app sidebars, Control Center, and notification banners, offering a more modern and dynamic look across the operating system.
Another key change in macOS Tahoe is the revamped Spotlight. The search experience now offers richer previews, faster results, and better context for apps, files, and web content. Apple has also added new animations, improved category organization, and deeper integration with system apps like Calendar, Mail, and Notes. Spotlight results now include more actionable options, letting users interact with data directly from the search interface.
macOS Tahoe also includes improvements to the Shortcuts app by adding support for Apple Intelligence. There’s also a new Phone app available on Mac, as well as support for Live Activities from a connected iPhone.
As there are no release notes from Apple, it seems that macOS Tahoe beta 5 is focused on performance tuning and bug fixes. Apple is expected to finalize the OS in September, shortly after the iPhone 17 event, when it typically announces release candidates for its major software platforms.
macOS Tahoe remains compatible with the same Macs that supported macOS Sonoma, including models going back to 2018. Developers testing this update have reported better battery performance and fewer UI glitches compared to earlier builds. Still, minor issues with Bluetooth stability and external monitor configurations persist for some users.
With beta 5 now available, Apple is likely just one or two builds away from releasing the RC version. Feedback from developers will help shape the final polish of macOS 15 before its official rollout to the public.
