Apple names John Ternus CEO as Tim Cook steps down

Apple has confirmed that Tim Cook will step down as chief executive in September 2026, marking the end of a 15 year run that defined the company’s post-Steve Jobs era. The company announced that John Ternus will take over as CEO starting September 1, while Cook transitions into the role of executive chairman.

The leadership change follows months of speculation around succession planning and comes at a time when Apple is under increasing pressure to prove it can compete more aggressively in artificial intelligence and next generation hardware. Cook will remain in his role through the summer to ensure a smooth transition before shifting focus to broader strategic responsibilities, including policy engagement.

Cook took over as CEO in 2011 after Steve Jobs stepped down, and went on to transform Apple into a $4 trillion company. During his tenure, Apple expanded well beyond the iPhone, building out major businesses in services, wearables, and health. Products like Apple Watch and AirPods emerged under his leadership, while the company also scaled its global supply chain and retail footprint.

At the same time, Apple has faced growing criticism in recent years for moving slower in categories like artificial intelligence. While competitors have pushed aggressively into AI platforms, Apple has taken a more measured approach, including integrating external technologies such as ChatGPT into its ecosystem. This leadership shift signals a possible change in direction.

Ternus brings a different profile to the role. Unlike Cook, who came from an operations background, Ternus has spent over two decades focused on hardware engineering. Since joining Apple in 2001, he has worked on nearly every major product line, including iPhone, iPad, Mac, and AirPods. He also played a key role in Apple’s transition to its own silicon, which has significantly improved performance and efficiency across Macs.

His appointment suggests Apple is doubling down on product innovation as it looks for its next growth driver beyond the iPhone. Analysts have pointed out that Apple remains heavily dependent on its smartphone business, and that future growth will likely come from new hardware categories such as wearables, mixed reality devices, and potentially AI driven products.

Cook described Ternus as a visionary leader with deep technical expertise and a strong understanding of Apple’s culture. Ternus, who worked closely with both Cook and Jobs, said he is optimistic about the company’s future and committed to continuing its focus on building products that shape how people interact with technology.

The transition also includes internal leadership changes, with Johny Srouji taking on an expanded role as chief hardware officer. These shifts indicate a broader restructuring of Apple’s leadership team as it prepares for its next phase.

Cook’s legacy at Apple is defined by scale, operational excellence, and sustained growth. Ternus now inherits a company that is financially dominant but facing new expectations around innovation, especially in AI. How Apple balances its disciplined approach with the need for faster experimentation will define its trajectory in the years ahead.
