FCC filing confirms Vision Pro refresh with M5 chip

Apple’s next Vision Pro refresh has been revealed through a filing with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The document lists a “Head Mounted Device” with model number A3416, and attached images confirm it as the Vision Pro. Apple products typically appear in FCC records only weeks before release, signaling that this update is imminent.

As spotted by MacRumors, the filing itself is technical, focusing on transmission, SAR, and wireless testing. It confirms that the new model continues to use Wi-Fi 6, with no evidence of Wi-Fi 6E or 6GHz band support. This indicates Apple has focused primarily on internal improvements rather than major connectivity changes. Apple also filed a confidentiality request, but the documents were still published, making the update visible ahead of schedule.

The most significant change expected is a switch from the M2 processor to the newer M5 chip. Apple silicon upgrades typically deliver stronger performance-per-watt, which is especially important for demanding visionOS apps, spatial video workflows, and multitasking with several apps in use. The new chip should also allow smoother handling of 3D design tools, higher-resolution passthrough, and more efficient thermal management.

No external design changes are anticipated which mean that the refreshed Vision Pro should remain compatible with existing accessories, such as head straps and protective covers. Pricing is also expected to stay at $3,499, positioning this model as a mid-cycle performance update rather than a full second generation.

The FCC batch that included this headset also referenced new MacBook Pro and iPad Pro models. This is consistent with Apple’s release cycle, where multiple products pass through certification close to launch. The Vision Pro update could therefore be announced alongside these devices before the end of the year.

Apple is also developing a thinner headset, often referred to as “Vision Air,” but that device is still years away and not expected until 2027. The filing confirms that Apple remains committed to maintaining and improving the current Vision Pro line while it works on longer-term projects.

For potential buyers, this refresh offers better performance for developers, content creators, and professionals using demanding visionOS apps without altering the form factor. Those waiting for a lighter or less expensive model will need to hold off for future releases, as this update is designed to extend the life of the current Vision Pro platform with stronger Apple silicon.
