WhatsApp is bringing its AI content label feature to iOS channel admins through beta version 26.34.10.70, available now via TestFlight. The label allows admins to mark images, videos, and other media created or edited with AI tools as artificially generated, with the marking visible to all channel followers and permanent once applied.
How the AI content label works
As reported by WABetaInfo, Channel admins access the label through a context menu option titled “Add AI content label” when composing or editing an update. Once selected, the label appears on the media bubble immediately and becomes visible to everyone in the channel, including other admins. Admins cannot remove the label after confirmation, making it a permanent disclosure mechanism that prevents accidental or intentional removal.
WhatsApp defines AI content broadly as “any images, videos or other media made or edited using AI tools,” encompassing content created with ChatGPT, Gemini, Meta AI, or similar platforms. Text-based AI content does not require labeling under this system. The distinction matters because admins labeling an AI-generated image still need not disclose if the accompanying text was drafted by an AI model, creating a partial disclosure standard rather than comprehensive AI transparency.
Regulatory requirement driving the feature
The label rolls out as part of WhatsApp’s response to emerging legal requirements in certain jurisdictions. In some countries, channel admins are legally mandated to disclose when media is AI-generated. The EU’s new transparency requirements for AI-generated content are directly motivating this rollout, alongside broader global regulatory shifts toward AI disclosure standards.
When the feature becomes available to an admin, WhatsApp displays a banner informing them of the labeling requirement in their region. This targeted approach suggests the feature may initially deploy only where legally required, though WhatsApp has not clarified which countries will receive access or when the rollout will expand globally. The banner notification tells admins compliance is mandatory in their jurisdiction, not optional.
Meta, which owns WhatsApp, has been adding disclosure labels across its family of apps as AI-generated content regulation tightens globally. Channels, now operating under the same transparency rules as group chat features on iOS, face escalating compliance expectations.
The feature is currently available to select beta testers on TestFlight and may reach some users on the stable iOS version with gradual rollout. Users unable to access the labeling option are likely in jurisdictions where the feature is not yet legally required.
