WhatsApp beta adds control over photo and video download quality on iOS

WhatsApp has released version 25.29.10.71 for iOS beta through TestFlight, introducing a new feature that lets users choose the quality for downloaded photos and videos. This update gives iPhone users more control over how media is automatically downloaded, balancing data usage, storage, and visual quality depending on their preferences.

The new media download quality control feature allows users to select whether photos and videos should be downloaded in standard or HD quality. This flexibility helps users optimize storage space and data consumption without compromising on visual clarity when they need it. The feature is accessible under Settings > Storage and Data, where a new “Auto-download quality” section appears for eligible beta testers.

When a photo or video is sent in HD, WhatsApp uploads both a standard and an HD version of the same file. The recipient’s app automatically downloads the version that matches their selected quality setting. For example, users who prefer faster downloads and smaller file sizes can choose standard quality, while those with higher bandwidth can opt for HD. This system works within WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption framework, meaning both versions remain private and securely processed on the sender’s and receiver’s devices.

The update also introduces a small but practical addition: photo and video file sizes now appear directly within chats. Tapping the HD icon reveals the file size and resolution of both standard and HD versions, helping users understand data usage before downloading larger files. This transparency offers a more informative and data-conscious experience when managing media across chats.

The goal behind the update is to address one of WhatsApp’s most persistent issues—automatic media downloads consuming unnecessary data and storage. With millions of images and videos shared daily, not every file needs to be saved in full HD. By allowing users to choose their preferred quality level, WhatsApp provides a more efficient and customizable media experience that adapts to varying network speeds and device capacities.

This feature is currently available to a limited number of iOS beta testers and will gradually roll out to more users in the coming weeks. WhatsApp often tests such features in phases to ensure smooth functionality and gather user feedback before a public release. Once fully rolled out, it will allow iPhone users to fine-tune how their app handles incoming media, offering a blend of flexibility, efficiency, and control.
