2024 OLED iPad Pro might cost up to $1800, more than 50% price hike

Rumor mills claim that Apple would debut new OLED iPad Pro models in 2024. Because of the advanced display tech, the tech giant is going to increase the prices of both 11-inch and 12.9-inch OLED iPad Pro models by up to 80% according to The Elec.

Currently, the 12.9-inch iPad Pro (4th and 5th generation) models feature mini-LED displays only and all the other iPad models feature LED LCD displays.

Organic light-emitting diode (OLED) tech uses pixels that glow in response to an electric current and produce their own light without a backlight. Thus, an OLED display produces higher picture quality with deeper blacks, lighting precision, and refresh rate than an LED (light-emitting diode) LCD (liquid crystal display), especially in low-light environments.

OLED panels are also thinner, lighter, and more flexible than LCD panels. However, OLED panels are more expensive than LCD panels because they are difficult to manufacture.

New prices of the 2024 OLED iPad Pro

The report states that Apple plans to increase the price of the 11-inch iPad Pro by 80% in 2024. From $799 to $1500 and increase the price of the 12.9-inch iPad Pro by 60%, from $1099 to $1800 in 2024. The alleged prices of the OLED iPad Pro models would be even higher than some MacBook models because of the new two-stack tandem display tech.

OLED for iPad has increased supply price by introducing new processes such as two stack tandem (two light emitting layers) structure, low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) thin film transistor (TFT), and hybrid OLED structure (glass substrate + thin film encapsulation). It is inevitable. Negotiations on the specific price of OLED for iPad are expected to begin in the summer.

Previously, The Elec reported that the 2024 OLED iPad Pro would likely cost more than current OLED devices of a similar size because of the pricey new production procedures required but did not mention the expected price.

It is also detailed that LG Display and Samsung Display are producing OLED panels for Apple’s new iPads but the companies have not decided on the supply price of the OLED panels. The supply price might increase by up to $170.

It is known that Apple, LG Display, and Samsung Display are discussing the supply price of OLED panels for iPad at around $270 for the 11-inch model and $350 for the 13-inch model. It is two to three times higher than the existing 10-inch low-end IT product OLED panel supply price of $100 to $150.
